Superintendent David Dettmann, of Victoria Police's Firearms Licensing Service, displays some of the 47 firearms seized by police from a house in Seville, east of Melbourne, on Thursday.
In the first major operation against unlicensed firearms since the state's gun amnesty ended on April 21 police seized high-powered semi-automatic shotguns and rifles and warned gun owners that they faced fines and jail terms if found with unlicensed firearms.
A further 51 registered firearms were found at the Seville property. Mr Dettmann said: "The owner appears to have been a collector, but that is no excuse. He now faces up to two years' jail and a $24,000 fine." More than 40,000 guns were handed in during the amnesty.
