View Full Version : Front sight elevation adjustment question
I have a Chicom SKS that I'd like to adjust the elevation via the front sight screw. I am, however, without the sight tool. A thin screwdriver blade through the center opening yields some success but when the opening face sideways, ie perpenticular to the bore, then this does not work. Is the hammer/punch combination the only alternative or would I be able to make my own (elevation) sight tool from some readily available home hardware?
I have made over a 100 of them.
1/4" round rod 4" long bend it 90 degrees in the middle. Then drill a hole in the end one drill bit size larger than the front sight pin 3/4" deep. Cut a slot in the end you just drilled with a dremmel tool and cut of wheel to slip over the front sight. It will take a little trail and error to get it to fit the front sight. Don't worry if you mess up just do the other end of the bent rod then cut the bad part off. When SKS were cheap and selling like hot cakes in the late 80's and early 90's I had a gun show dealer that would sell a dozen of my tools every gun show.

try an open end box wrench to turn the site, maybe a small rachet-- (i have never tried this so its just a suggestion) OR maybe take a wooden dowel and cut a slot in it to fit the site --- im sure theres many creative ways to make that thing turn--HTH

Any AK/SKS cleaning kit (original cylinder type) should have the tool, a small shaft with a flat blade on one side and a spanner wrench-with-center hole on the other side. They sell for $5.00 most anywhere.
Thanks for all the ideas. I did check the cleaning kit that came with the rifle but it only has the brush, the patch tool and a push-pin; other than the housing and its cap.
