Hey guys,

I'm beginning to think that I'm the only one here using plain old RemOil. I have started using brake-parts cleaner to flush out the barrel, but have not managed to find any of the other stuff you guys recommend (CLP, Tri-Flo, etc.). I'm on a quest to make my AK's rust-proof, because I recently got out one of mine and found rust forming in a couple spots. Any advice on the least harmful way to remove rust, and restore the metal/finish? I remember someone on this board said that painting your AK will make it virtually rust-proof. Is there any truth to that? What sort of paint do you use? I'm sure that everyone out there has had their dealings with rust, and someone probably has good advice on how to prevent it.

If you are getting rust when using Remoil I have to conclude that Remoil just don't cut it for long term rifle finish protection. You might try reappling Remoil more often. To remove rust rub the spots with 0000 steel wool after putting some oil on them. The bake on paint from Brownells is really good stuff. After baking the painted parts in your kitchen oven per instructions the finish is very durable to wear and scratches.
One of my Maddi's I touched up with the 99 cent flat black spray paint from Wal-mart after the finish chipped and scratched from use.

Thanks JA,

Would you recommend going ahead and painting them with cheap flat-black spray paint for added rust protection?

I helped a friend/gundealer do several rifles and shotguns with brownells bake on paint. We used the black and grey. The grey looks just like phosphate on his Barret .50BMG model 82 semi auto rifle. After breaking it down and painting it was still to long to get in the kitchen oven. The finish is holding up real well. The 2 mossberg 500's we did for a couple of friends after bakeing the disassembled and painted shotguns the finsh is as hard as nails.
The whole trick to painting guns is to degrease them twice with laquer thinner or alchol. Not the drug store rubbing kind as it is a alchol/water mix. 100% alchol can be found in the hardware store in the paint section. Use in a well ventalated area or you will get drunk as a skunk from the fumes.
Put some in a spray bottle and get the inside clean too as oil/grease will turn into a thin liquid and run out of the inside of the gun when you bake it in the oven. This will cause the edges of the painted surface to chip.
I used the 99 cents a can for touch up but would go the $7.95 a can baking lauqer or Aluna hyde II.

You can send your AK off and have that NP3 or parkarized finish put on. Don't send it now, because you may need that baby when the SHTF!
