Gun control regulations issued for Aqaba

AMMAN (Petra) — The Ministry of Interior will start implementing the Cabinet's decision prohibiting the holding of arms and arms possession in the Aqaba Special Economic Zone (ASEZ) and its decision to regulate the possession of weapons within the port city of Aqaba as of today, said Minister of Interior Qaftan Majali on Monday.

Pursuant to the decision, all automatic rifles, regular and hunting guns found in the possession of any citizen will be confiscated and delivered to the Public Security Department (PSD) of Aqaba. Each person handing over his weapon voluntarily will be refunded in conformity with the Prime Ministry's decision.

Also, all valid weapons licences will be cancelled. At the same time, citizens in the city of Aqaba will be entitled to submit an application to the Aqaba PSD to obtain a licence for the possession of a pistol. Those already holding such licences should present an application to the department for renewal.

The decision allows the citizens within the city of Aqaba who have licensed hunting guns to take them out of the city. It also calls on the people coming to the city with a licensed pistol to hand it over to the security officials at either Wadi Youtum or the Wadi Araba customs points. Anyone concealing a weapon in his vehicle or failing to hand it over will be held in violation of the law.

The issue of arms possession is regulated by the 1952 law on arms and live ammunition No. 34 and its amendments, and the regulations issued according to it, Majali said.
