FWIW
The 1916 rifle is a 1895 Mauser action designed for the 7x57 cartridge with a SAAMI pressure limit of 46,000CUP. This action does not have the third saftey lug that the 1898 action has. The .308 has a SAMMI pressure limit of 52,000CUP. IIRC the 7.62x51 is slightly lower than the .308. A test was conducted by White Laboratories a number of years ago in which this rifle was subjected to approximately 90,000CUP before the action failed. I have contacted the White Laboratories in search of further information in regards to this test. They informed me that the test results were the property of the company, I believe it was SamcoGlobal that paid for the test and they could not provide additional information. I have seen a number of posts on various boards to the effect that these rifles were converted in Spain for the .308 CETME round which is of a lower power than the standard NATO 7.62x51. I personally have never seen this bit of information documented anywhere. I believe REDSTAR has one of these rifles so perhaps he, as well as AKWARRIOR can give his opinion. All things being what they are it is still high on my Wish List. As an aside the general consensus seems that if reduced handloads are used there are no safety concerns with this conversion. As I said, food for thought. My pressure figures may be as outdated as my Speer #8 manual so feel free to correct them. HTH

VERY Enjoyable to shoot. The ones from Samco were in VG+ condition as of last year anyway when I got mine. Nice Carbine type Mauser that IMO is much safer than your car. Here's a copy of the article from Guns and Ammo with a review and a brief of the tests performed.Get yerself one of the 15&3/4" pig stickers from SOG to stick on the end of that bad boy and you'll be set! (M1893 Spanish Bayo, SOG $16)

Here's a link to the article it takes too long to download here as an IMG

I get the same results with these 1916 Mausers as with my FR8.It takes a bit of umph to open the bolt after most shots..(A good bump upward on the bolt to uncock.)Maybe this is evidence of over pressure but this has been my experience with South African M1A2 ball in both the FR8 and 1916's most of the time.It wouldnt hurt to reload 308 for these.Maybe try a light powder charge.
