What are they and how much do they go for?

For what kind of rifle? A sawback bayonet is exactly what it implies, the back edge of the bayonet has a sawblade on it for cutting small trees...

Schuetzenman has one for his Schmidt Rubin. He got it in Switzerland. It is very rare.

collects bayonets. Down in Florida. Anyway that's the next one he wants. I told him I knew a bunch of guys who know this stuff. He told me that the Germans had these but at the start of WWII they were issued and then de-issued.

1. There is a article on the sawback bayonet in the American Rifleman this issue. It was originally issued to the Germans in WWI but were discarded by the troops on the frontlines. If captured with one things did not go well for the individual holding it. It was considered inhumain and those bayos on the front had the sawteeth ground off. In 1917 the S.84.98 Bayonet was discontinued.

2. Actual prices werent mentioned but they are considered very rare for the K-98's and very collectable.

The Swiss saw back is called a Pioneer Bayonet. They were given to artillery units as they would need to cut tree branches or roots when making an emplacment for a motar or gun.

They are also quite rare and have a value ranging from $150 for a fair condition to over $200 for VG to Ex condition specamines.

The German bayos are as already discussed by earlier posters.

Here is a series of pictures of my Swiss Bayonet.

The top is the Model 1914 Pioneer model and has a wicked saw back. Blade is 18.9 inches and the overall is about 24 inches. They were issued to 1911 Carbine models and the K31 Schmidt Rubens. The bottom is a more conventional Swiss Bayonet the 1918 model. It's has a 11.8 inc blade and is about 17 inches overall in length. This model was issued to the 1911 Carbine and the K31 as well.

Another view showing it mounted on a K31. I think the saw teeth show up much better in this view.

That's not a bayonet, that's a small sword that just happens to fit a rifle!

I saw a pioneer bayonet for the K-31 on one of the auction boards last week and the starting price was $250.00.

Too high IMO. There is/was a guy in Switzerland on swissrifles.com (IIRC) selling them for $150 plus shipping. He always seemed to have some primo stuff there too...

For $250 it better be the most mint condition one I've ever seen! $190 is proabably the most common price I've seen them for.

very cool guys........I had never seen one of these before that I remember......I have been thinking of starting a bayo collection myself but not sure if I should start something else. I am waiting on UPS now to delver my Century order.....a bunch of bayo's laying around would most certainly make it easier for my wife to get rid on me in my sleep........:D
