View Full Version : Numrich's MAS36

Ok, the bbt delivered my MAS1936 today. It was what I expected, I was kinda hoping it might have been better. Total price was $41.95 (36.00 + 5.95 shipping) delivered to the West Coast. It is definately a NRA Good.
The bore is clean and shiny, not dark or bright or full of crap. Rifling looks good. The trigger guard is the only number matching the receiver. The bolt and magazine floorplate have different numbers. The follower is covered with cosmo and there is cosmo everywhere except for the bore. The barrel looks blued, I thought the MAS's were parkerized? As you can tell, the handguards are black (dirty). The buttstock has no serial number stamped on it.
Something that I'm not used to is the rifle was wrapped and taped with bubble wrap. Class operation, not just shoved into the box like the other companies.
For the price, I would definitely get a few more. This is only $10.00 (this month) more then Century's u-fix-em and it's COMPLETE.
The importer is GPC, Hurley, NY. I didn't know Numrich was also an importer.
These pictures are fresh out of the box and the last 2 digits of the serial number has been erased.

you beat me to it. I was going to start a thread "Numerich has a great deal!" Buy 36 dollars of cosmoline and they throw in a MAS 36 MLE for free. To make a point, this gun is in about the same shape as the Jungle Carbine I bitched about. I haven't checked the barrel yet but it's basically in good shape. wood is torn nicked here and there all over. My #s all match except for the bolt which is actually lower. The screws in the buttplate are on essentially one with the buttplate. Bayonet has mild rust but is blued also. I don't know the difference between bluing and parkerization but you know what I'm sayin. Much shorter than what I expected. Didn't expect a carbine. Any way to research the serial # and what this gun might have been thru? LP where did you find the importers stamp? On the stock, bolt side, there is a circle inside a circle that looks like it was faintly stamped. WWII French Liberation Forces under DeGaulle? Serial is L 95XXX

Here's the one I refinished, it looked alot worse than yours does. I just cleaned the wood really well with a strong alkali cleaner, mean green, then I reoiled with BLO.
The original finish was painted, I could tell by the underside under the wood which was as good as new, the rest was chipped and little finish. I used brownell's gloss black baking laquer on it and it's hard as nails. I almost shot this baby in the competition but the K31 beat it by a little.

barrelling, no pitting visible. Counterboring is where they rerifle the bore in the other direction correct? Mine does not have that.

When you take the wood off, there should be a date on the underside of the chamber. That one I posted a pic of is dated 1945.
Before someone asks, the little tiny screw towards the muzzle is a tad difficult to get off. I used a pair of jewelers needle nose, very fine tips.

I'm going to sit this outside tomorrow, barring rain, and let the sun get some of this cosmoline out. That screw looks a tad stripped. Lastly, how does the joke go "only used once, dropped twice"? Mine looks like it's been to war. Ever little nick and scratch, scrape over all the wood. Mine is one dinged rifle but that doesn't bother me as I like to think that this rifle may have seen service in Viet Nam, Algiers, the Belgian Congo. Possibly carried by French Liberation soldier in England waiting for DeGaulle to lead them into Paris.

They just shipped the two I ordered and they're in Meadowlands, NJ, and heading south to Florida. I don't care if they're dinged and dirty, as long as they shoot. I can scrub and clean and refinish, but I can't replace non-existant rifling.

All the MAS36 and 36/51's that I've seen, even the beat to crap ones, have had nice bores.
DANG I wish I had a copy of my license at Numerich right about now. I'll have to mail one friday and hope they still have some of these rifles by the time they get it on file. Maybe a money order and letter is in order for this purchase.

I'm glad this one's been humped all over. Been cleaning it with lemon oil and damn she looks good right now (another field gauge to order LOL). Believe me I wasn't complaining. It also has a green 6 painted between the wrist and trigger guard as well as 0 with a dot in the mitddle cartouche on the bottom of the wrist grip? No I never thought I'd get excited about a French rifle but this one is a real pleaser. I can't wait to shoot it but will have to anyway. No ammo.
Mine took forever to get here which is rare with UPS. Realize UPS might be striking at the end of this month if they don't get their contract resolved.

Redstar call them Friday, make sure they're still in stock, and if they do make sure it's 41.95 total, send them a copy of your C&R, a check, a piece of paper ordering it and get it in the mail. Considering it was all by mail their processing was lightening quick, 3 days from when I mailed it. Tack a week on to that for delivery. MFin UPS sat it here in St. Louis for almost 2 days before delivering it

Thanks to LPSpinner getting me excited about the U-Fixems and to Vonmazur who first posted it over at Parallax's BB and then here. Really of all my rifles I right now like Turk#1 and this the best. I don't know why. Maybe it's the Irish and the Scot in me who likes a deal. I don't expect this to be ever worth any money unless I can document it's history somehow. But holding it, unlike my other rifles, I just feel like this saw action based on it's condition. Am I an expert? No. Am I putting my wishes upon it? Possibly. But I've connected with the gun, more than the Jungle Carbine or my M44. Sweet
The only drawback to this rifle is I'm left handed. I personally wouldn't want to take this to battle given it's bolt configuration

Guinny:
You're welcome. Glad I was able to infect someone with my enthusiasm. This is my 3rd MAS36. They are fun to shoot. After shooting my M39, I switched to the MAS and was surprise that it spoke almost as loud. I was using MAS36 #2 that didn't have any parts to the magazine. Just treated it like a single shot rifle. I can tell you right now, that it seems to like the Egyptian surplus, not the Indep stuff. Now the hard part is working up the right loads.
My Yugo SKS M59's and M59/66's that I got from RLFF have seen action in the Serbian-Croatian wars. Man, if only they can talk.
At least I'll know not to soak and bake the buttstock on this one.
If you don't have the right tool to remove that front screw, what I did was fit a paperclip to the screw, then clamp it with a Slip Joint Pliers as close to the screw as possible. Hold tight and turn. Works fine.
Here's your importer's stamp....

Counterboring is when a drill bit, just slightly larger than the bore diameter is run into the bore from the muzzle end. Usually to a depth of 1" or so. I've heard of counterbores of 2" in depth. This will usually remove all traces of rifling from the bore to that depth. The purpose is to restore a uniform crown to the muzzle. Over zealous use of a cleaning rod can wear the muzzle over time, that's why it's always best to clean from the breech end when possible. This results in an out of round or distorted crown on the barrel. Since the gases behind the bullet as it exits the barrel will divert unevenly due to this distortion, the projectiles trajectory can be altered. It's a way to restore some measure of accuracy. I have seen this done with many Mosins and both my MAS 36 and 49 are counterbored. You can even do it yourself with a good drill bit. Something to consider if you got a rifle that's just not shooting like it could.

Mine's not stamped then and no counterboring. Rifling comes all the way to the barrel end. Of the three carbines I own (Jungle Carbine should be on it's way come tomorrow, M44 and this) this is the heaviest and has a great natural feel to it. The only deal killer is that bolt. Being a lefty is hard enough but this one would get me killed in battle. Other than that I like it. I like that green 6 painted on it. I like the dark unfinished look contrasted with the unblued metal that speaks of beingg used. The metal is scratched as well. Bolt knob is drilled out too like the Jungle Carbine.

It is common for the muzzle of a military rifle to be badly worn fron the steel cleaning rod . Sometimes the first inch or so is bored out with a slightly larger bit , in an attempt to get to a point where the rifleings are still good .

I agree REtVet...and will add that I also hate these large corps that wont spring for a 1-800 number ........I called them 3 times on Wednesday and all three times listened to the recording, punched in the correct numbers to get someone on the line, listened for about 5 minutes to elevator music and then was told by a recorded message that they were all busy and to call back later and was hung up on....That makes me mad considering I am paying for the calls........

That screw shouldn't be on very tight. You can also use a snap-ring plier or what I did was take a large paperclip and fit it into the holes, used a electricians pliers (flat top) grip it JUST above the top of the screw and turn.

I was screwing around after working on both my Turks. I think I'm going to finish Turk #2 on the stock repair before I break it down. All kinds of crud under that end cap. I was researching over at the Parallux and someone there posted that early MAS metal was painted black.
