The bullet has phosphorous or some other burning material that allows you to see the bullet as it flies through the air. The burning doesn't start until the bullet leaves the barrel so it won't hurt your weapon. You've seen tracers on TV in Iraq. They were all those jagged lines coming from the ground headed for the sky. M60 machine guns are loaded with every fifth round being a tracer. With the AK, loading the first two rounds as tracers in the magazine is a good idea. When you see the tracers go down range, it's time to change magazines...

Always remember tracers work both ways. You can direct fire with them and you can attract fire with them...

There is no phosphorus in tracers. It is a baruim nitrate/magnisum/steric acid mix. Then there is the ignigter compound pressed on top of it. Then a closure cup crimped on top of it. Been there made 100,000's of them.

A little trick used by the Rhodesian Light Infantry. They would load a tracer first and fifth. It seems that the ZALU's and ZANU's figured out that a tracer meant the shooter was low on his magazine and would advance during reloading although this ammounted to a couple of seconds max. However in close-in fighting this could mean life or death. Since most RLI squads were usually 8 men or less depending and fighting upwards of 40 enemy at a time every little trick helped. One interesting point in the Rhodesian war was that the RLI never lost more than 15 men
in a single battle.
