I agree that the old mil-sup ammo, fmj or h.p. does about the same soft tissue damage, but in reguards to the much deeper hole in the new Wolf brand. One armorer, who looked at it said the center of gravity was futher back, due to deeper hole which "could" cause the projectile to yaw after impact and penetration on soft tissue. I don't think the new Wolf h.p. will mushroom but why would the Russians make the hole deeper? I am curious to know what your thoughts are on this different design. Thanks DADDUCK

In my informal water jug tests I tried both varieties of Russian HP (shallow & deep cavity). Occasionally both would fragment violently but usually both would yaw and remain intact. The deep cavity HP (judging by the destructive effects on the water jugs) does yaw sooner. If memory serves then the deep cavity HP used to have a plastic cap in the base but when this step was removed from the manufacturing process the entire lead core was shifted back to take up the space. I don't know if the deep cavity HP is really that much more effective than the shallow cavity on soft targets, but the physics premise for early yawing is sound (see this link: http://www.fen.baynet.de/norbert.arnoldi/army/wound.html ) and it's accurate enough for my needs so the deep cavity HP is my current round of choice for if TSHTF. I have sectioned all the known types of Russian hollow point cartridges and classify them as follows:

1st generation. 1992-1994. shallow cavity with a plastic spacer in the base of the jacket.

2nd generation. 1994- present. deep cavity
with the lead core at the rear of the jacket.

3rd generation. 1998- present. shallow cavity, flat based projectile.

The wolf ammunition is nothing new, as it follows the 2nd generation design. It will, however, have a greater tendancy to yaw than the 1st and 3rd generation designs due to the fact that the core is so far to the rear of the jacket in comparison to the overall length of the projectile. I beleive this design evolved from the 1st generation simply as a cheaper and easier one to mass produce, since the plastic spacer and it's extra manufacturing steps have been eliminated.

Thanks! (sounds) like it was not an intentional move toward improving on......killing power but rather a progression as described as the ammo is produced. If ammo is ordered from Ammoman I understand it's shipped 1000 bulk(loose in box) does anybody know what brand it is? I think the best choice MAY BE the Cheetah, what do you say? Know one knows for sure how much longer we have to continue ordering ammo at these resonable prices I just want to order ammo which will have a relatively long "shelf" life. I strongly believe, from what large distributors inform the State Armorer, who I know, that RETAIL prices of ammo is soon to go (way) up. Freedom or Death Dadduck

I do not know much about Cheeta brand ammo, but have only heard good things
so far. As for long term storage, I think any
of the currently available 7.62x39 ammo
is fine so long as it is stored properly. I have all the ammo I will ever need, so the current or future prices are of little concern.
For those that need to stock-up, it is best to do it now as the prices are reasonable and the future is uncertain. There have been ammo price scares in the past and always the price and availability has stabilized after a time. This may or may not be the case in the near future however.
