I just love the 54r rnds. Its one of the best rnd ever made. The 54r rnds are more powerfull then the 51 rnds. Both rnds are very accurate. The recoil of 54r is a little bit more then the 51. Both rnds are great for long distance shooting. The 54r has a kill range of 4000 meters in a Dragunvo. If I could choose one rifle rnd. I would pick the 51 rnd. because it more in use in the US.

In reply to your question I can give you my humble opinion based on experience. I am a former Dept of Public Safety Tact Officer and our rifle was Rem bdl .308. It can do more but the effective range is 500yds. I recently tested a Nigant, with a scope, out to that range and was able to keep the rounds on a standard B27 PPC target. I would not be concerned at all in making a BODY shot on the other end but since the rifle was old and the ammo out of a tin can one cannot expect 2moa at 500 yds. I would love to shoot a fresh milatary sniper rifle in that caliber after my encounter with the old Nigant. Dollar for dollar the Nigant, even with a cheap scope, and tuna can ammo, is, in my opinion, the best long range shooter available and money invested in it would go a long way simply from a 'hit the target' standpoint. Cartridge/GRAIN/FPS/Energy (ft-lbs)"muzzle velocity"
.308 /150gr. /2603fps /2257ft-lbs
.308 /165gr. /2538fps /2360ft-lbs

7.62x54R /149gr /2789(low)2908(high)
/183gr /2510(low)2624(high)

.30-06 /150gr /2580 fps /2217ft-lbs
.30-06 /180gr /2611 fps /2724ft-lbs

-- lost my calculator, so wasnt able to calculate the ft-lbs for the 7.62.

not as detailed as ccan be, due to lack of window size.
got data from Gun Digest yearly guide.
the best most impressive was ofcourse the 50BMG with an unbelieveable high of 13,688ft-lbs! with a 660gr bullet.
compare that to the 7.62x39/ 122gr. 1470 ft-lbs.

Put away your calculators & check out this site; www.angelfire.com/mo2/rifleroom/energy.html (http://www.angelfire.com/mo2/rifleroom/energy.html)

Well I suppose if you know how to figure this out on a calculator, that's great. I just don't know how, so I use this.

thanks for that site.
using a calculator is pretty simple.

to find the muzzle energy ( ft-lbs), take the velocity squared, then times the
bullet weight, then divide by 450400.

Thanks for the info. Now I know how to do it manually too! After all, that site might not be there forever.
