I was just looking at the latest SOG catalog. They have the French MAS 36's in .308 caliber for $139.95 each. They are in very good condition and they say that they only have a few available. Currently, I don't have any French rifles and know nothing about them. The reason I don't have any is because I don't want to spend a fortune on that 7.5 ammo. .308 caliber, however, is reasonably affordable.

My problem is that I am nearly broke and will have to sell my soul to get one. Are they worth it? I'm not really using my soul right now, so that shouldn't be a problem--and I can buy it back later. These are the first French rifles that I have seen in this caliber. So, what do you guys think? Thanks in advance for your help.

The 36 bolt gun is possibly the only conversion to 7.62 X 71 Nato that I'd trust to work right. Will they set the world on fire, probably not. I find the French rifles have too much drop on the combs of the stock so expect 2 things.

1. To get a good cheek weld you'll be looking into the back of the receiver and not into the sight. Meaning you have to do a "jaw" weld rather than a cheek weld.

2. Under recoil the angle of the comb on the buttstock will drive back into your face, causing pain and possible bruising.

IMO you'd be better off getting a M48 series of Mauser or saving your bucks further and getting a Swedish Mauser if you don't have one. Not that theres any cheap 6.5 X 55 surplus either. However if you buy in bulk you can reload for about .22 / round.

If you don't reload and don't intend to in the near future than this would probably be a good deal. The standard MAS 36 rifles are increasing in value so this one is not out of line IMO as it is definetly a shooter in this caliber. Getting one of the grenade launching butt pads makes quite a bit of difference in shooting the MAS, at least for me. It gives a little more length which is nice if you've got longer arms. While I've never had the problems Schuetz described with regards to recoil each rifle fits or perhaps dosen't fit each person differently. HTH

Got the flyer and couldn't resist. Last rifle I ordered from SOG got here the next day though it's late enough it probably won't get here until Wednesday. If you want to wait I'll post my comments as soon as it arrives.

Thanks for the replies, guys. If there's one thing I don't need, it's more facial deformity. As far as adding some length to the buttstock with a pad goes, I'm a little guy who doesn't have the arm length to spare. It'll be interesting to see what you get, Richard. I was reading the other thread about the $36.00 fair to good ones at Gunparts, so I sent them a copy of my license. I'm thinking that it should be there about Friday or so. Since money is really tight right now, maybe I'll order one of those in the 7.5 caliber. I really don't shoot very much anyway. I called and they said they still had plenty of them left and didn't expect to run out soon.

I really would prefer the .308, but it would be difficult to resist buying one for over $100 less. I don't have any reloading equipment, and don't expect to get any for, at least, a few years. You can't buy that ammo here in Southern Indiana, so I'll have to order it over the internet.

What about that Swiss 7.5 that AIM has for $3.95 for a box of 10? All 7.5 is the same, isn't it? When I say "same," I mean that it will all chamber and fire in a gun that says 7.5.

Let us know about your purchase, Richard. If you get it on Wednesday, I'll still have at least a couple of days before Gunparts gets my license.

Oh yeah, I have an M48A. It's an awesome gun.

7.5 Swiss and 7.5 MAS are not the same round.

Tracy,

Commerically made ammo will be produced by Hornady this fall. So, it's not that far off.

At 41.95 otd you can't beat the price. Since you said you don't shoot that much, buy the 200 rounds from WGA and that should last you for a while.

Ooouuuuch! Well, it's better to get the answer here than to buy the ammo and then find out.

As far as buying 200 rounds goes, I'm short on cash at present, so all I need to do is scrounge up a few rounds to test shoot the thing. Then, later, if I stop buying guns, I might be able to get some ammo to shoot it.

Thanks again, guys.

I just checked prices on the 7.5 French ammo. I can't afford the $100 at WGA and SOG is out and doesn't have any on order. :(

Does anyone know where I can get a box or two? I'm thinking about 20 or 40 rounds.
Thanks again.

Is there anything wrong with the converted rifles? I am always looking out for a 7.62 x 51 rifle. I have an FR-8 and a CETME, and I plan on getting a Enfield 2A and eventually an FAL-style rifle. I've often heard that the conversion rifles are unsafe, any truth to that here? Also, SOG doesn't have them on thier website, is this offer in the current SGN, or do I have to ask SOG for their flyer?

To my knowledge, the MAS 36's do okay with the conversion. It is just that I can get one of the 7.5's much cheaper at this point. I would much prefer the .308 caliber, however.

Also, I just found out where I can get 7.5 ammo for 50 cents a round. All I have to do is drive a rinky dinky winding 2 lane highway for about 60 miles to get to the store.

I need to get out of here. I'm at work and big brother watches everything I do. They'll be coming to take me away.

Oh, BTW, I found the rifle in the flyer SOG just sent to me.

Tracy,

L.C. Enterprises in WI has 100 rounds (5 boxes) for $65.00 of the new reloadable Indep stuff. You may want to ask if they sell only a box or two. You would want to keep the brass for future reloading.
This ammo is fine for the MAS36, but may be underpower for some MAS49/56's.

Their number is (608) 464-7615

Tell big brother, "hey at least it's not a porn site" :D

Thanks. I'll keep them in mind if I can't figure out a way to plan a family day around going to the gun shop.

That's funny. I work in a hospital and the ones that like to visit the porn sites are the DOCTORS! That disturbs me a little bit. FYI, I'm an accountant.
