Just got them in last night. Both are pretty much as expected, maybe a little better. I would call them a solid good overall. All complete. Sorry no digital camera so pics will have to wait till I can bum one again.

First one has about 10% metal finish left (black paint). No matching numbers, but none were expected anyway. The barrel looks fine. Strong rifling and fairly shiny, but with lightly frosted grooves. As for the stock, lots of small dings just about everywhere, very dirty, but you can still see some wood grain. No gouges. The bolt functions nice and smooth. Should clean up nicely.

Second one. About the same, but a little less black paint. Slightly cleaner. Only difference noted is with the bore. While about the same, the crown area looks like it's recessed about 3/16 inch. Is this what's called counter boring? Not sure as I've never seen one before. This one should clean up nicely as well.

I think I might refinish one, and just clean up the other leaving it in its original dinged up, war torn beauty.

I got original French slings for both for $5.10 each. Very dirty too, but hey, no big deal here!

If you're looking for a garden variety French MAS 36 and don't want to spend 3 figures for one, call GunParts Corp. and grab one of these while you can! I wish I had picked up a few more already. ;)

Have fun with them. One of my newest 36's has a recessed crown. It's the only one. Counterboring is when they drill into the bore from the muzzle about an inch or so and remove the rifling. This leaves the bore looking like a shotgun barrel at the very end. Restores accuracy.

Richard et alii: I have noticed that all original pre war guns have full rifling, all postwar guns, including Mle 44. 49, and 36, seem to be counterbored from the factory....
