So was it 36 dollars of cosmoline with a rifle inside like Guinny_Ire (I think ;) ) reported?

Dirty, but not too much cosmoline. Clean up should be fairly easy. It's just deciding how far to go in restoring. I'm leaning towards a complete refinish of one and just a good clean up of the other. Have to wait and see how the initial clean goes goes. I prefer the original old beat up rifle look on these war dogs I think.
