I only shoot my SLR-95 at the range and do not hunt. I plan to purchase a large quantity of 7.62x39 because I have an Chinese SKS and Egyptian Maadi on the way.
Because I only shoot targets at the range, should I stock up on FMJ or both? Other than hunting, are there any reasons to choose one over the other? I have only shot Russian HP through my SLR, about 300 rounds, and have had absolutely no problems.
My plan is to accumulate a sizable quantity over the next year or two. I welcome any comments, opinions or suggestions. Thanks in advance.
BTW, I plan to store the ammo in 50 cal. ammo cans.

Hi! I chose the HP for 2 reasons: FMJ is considered less "range-friendly" where I shoot and if, heaven forbid, I should ever have to use my SLR-95 for something other than target shooting then I want better performance than FMJ if possible. I can fit 45 boxes of the 7.62HP in a .50 cal can and still have room for a small bag of dessicant. Posts about using the HP for hunting indicate good performance out to at least 150yds. Hope this helps!... Tomac
Tomac...Do you store your ammo loose or in the boxes? I keep mine in 50 cal cans but can only get 800 rounds per can ( I leave them in the boxes). I've heard that you can get some corrosion if you store them loose...don't know if this is true or not but don't want to take any chances with my long term stash. Where do you get your dessicant? I need to get some for mine also. Thanks

In the .50 can I store it in the boxes (3 layers of 3x5 boxes). I also have a couple of .30 cans with 390rds in each on stripper clips with a stripper clip guide & a small dessicant bag. I collected dessicant bags while in the Navy (when unpacking electronics gear), can't recall seeing anyplace that has them for sale (I would imagine there has to be *some* place selling them...) The smaller ones are most useful for ammo cans and such but I also have some much larger ones that would only be useful for storing items in much larger containers. Maybe someone could post a source for dessicant? Tomac

I agree range for range shooting restrict yourself to hollow points. Some FMJ (yes even lead core)cartridges can be nasty and I have seen some extraordinary penetration. I have no doubt one could go through todays thin car doors.

Tomac and Jimbob,
I was planning to stock up mainly on FMJ. Now I'm going to change that to HP, probably 3 to 1 over FMJ.
Thanks for your advice.
