Whats with the magnet thing, does that mean it is brass casing?

Most of the Eastern ammo, as well as Chinese, was designed to use minumum resources. Steel is cheaper and more plentiful than copper (necessary for brass), so the cases, bullet jackets, and (originally) most of the bullet was steel. There was only enough lead around the core to allow the bullet to deform to seal the bore. After the ATF banned steel-core 7.62x39, the lead-core bullets (which are shorter, without a boat-tail, in all I have examined) still had enough steel in the case and jacket to be picked up by a magnet. Supposedly you can tell whether or not the bullet has a steel core, but I don't know how to distinguish them.

Your Cheeta brand ammo is made in
Zimbabwe, Africa, reportedly on machinery
supplied by the Chinese. I have not had much experience with this stuff, as it has not made it's way up here to New England
that I know of. The examples I have seen
(and have in my collection) appear to be well made, though. The "magnet test"
will not tell you if the projectile contains a steel core, if the jacket is made of steel. To my knowledge, the only steel core ammo ever made with a Copper (non-magnetic) jacket is AP from Finland. Two other possible copper jacketed steel core cartridges are Yugoslavian API and Ball, M-59. Both of which are in the realm of the collector. I am curious how the Cheeta ammo performs for you. As soon as I come across a few boxes, I will try them out as well.

So there really is a Cheetah ammo? What's a good source and price for this ammo?

Check the posting around May 10 in the ammunition section for full info about Cheetah.
I bought a case and it is supreme. Yes, made on a Chinese furnished plant with their machinery. It comes with a brass case and a magnet will not be attracted to any component. It shoots at least as good as I do. The seller claimed to have a huge amount in his warehouse (several million rounds), but this was three plus months ago.
Place an order by phone. They are pleasant to deal with and delivered immediately.
Good luck

I just went and checked the old posting. Look for "11 cents a round for 7.62 x 39....."
There is a link to Vector Arms who is the seller. They are still advertising it at 11 cents a round for 3 cases of 1440 rounds or 11 1/2 for one or two cases. As I recall, they did not not hit me with a credit card surcharge. As menory serves me. the shipment was from Utah which is a real plus for those paying shipping to the west coast.
You will not be disappointed with this ammo.

If you shoot any where in the U.S Forest Area, u can t shoot steel, since the sparks cause forest fires.. So now and then a guy will go down the range w. a magnet and if u are using Russ, or Commie type ammo all of it seems to have steel in the bullet jkt... The steel core is for the most part gone, but theres still steel in the bullet. The S. Af. stuff, and the Cheetah stuff is more like PMC,or Win. ammo, but with Berdan primers, and half the price..
