Best I can say is they look Chinese--of course I'm sure you knew that. Curious, is this the same rifle that Sheutzenman explained the difference between .321/.323 bullets/use regarding modern 8mm?
Reason I ask is I've been looking into a Chinese 88 and I found one for a good price with the .323 bore.

It should be a .318 bore. Its one of the pics sent to me by the current owner who is keen to sell. And of course i am keen on buying, but i have no idea of whether those markings are arabic, chinese, japanese ( i understand the japanese got some 1888 rifles) or the work of a child with a dremel. Its the only thing that sticks out in the pics i got, apart fromt the fact there is no charger-loading slot or magazine cover plate modification.

Wish I could be of some assistance but this is definitely far from my field of expertise. It is rather unusual, I'll be interested to see what kind of replies you get on this one. Good luck.

Yes this is the type of rifle I was talking about. What these markings are I do not know. The S at the top of the original markings near the alignment hash mark may refer to the improved cartridge and bore dims.
