Hello all,
new member here from South Africa.

I wonder if any of U out there can help me out. I need to remove the front sight hood on my K98k so that I may replace the barrel bands, the problem being, it's unlike any front sight hood I've ever seen, has a large hole through ahead of the sight blade (towards shooter) that houses a transverse roll pin.

The pin is peened flat, and seems very tightly wedged into place.
Should I file the peened ends off, and punch out? Is thereanother technique?

BTW, my K98k is FN made, with the replacement Israeli made barrel in 7.62mm, dated August 1958 FWIW.

The reason I'm replacing barrel bands is that they have been heavily scratched and dented, the prevoius owner seemed to have tried to "modify" them, and did soem damage..

My rifle is also unfortunately not original, as he also had the action drilled and tapped, bolt handle is bent, and there is a Pachmayer recoil pad in place of the steel but plate.

I'm hanging onto this one because it'sdarn accurate. Milsurp SA ball 147gr shoots into 2-3" @ 100m (iron sights), while handloaded 155gr Match Sierras go into .05"-1" also iron sights!

In fact with a Nikko Sterling 4x44scope, it's more accurate than my Remington 700Bdl .30-06!!!!

Hope someone is able to help in removing that pesky sight hood.
Regards,
Darian

I'm not sure how your roll pins look, but here's what I did to remove mine....which were in pretty tightly.
I clamped the barrel in place and used a commom penetrating oil to help loosen things up...I gave it a good soaking and left it for 30 minutes.
I then used a steel punch and hammer to remove the pin by tapping it out from left to right....it took about 20 minutes to drive the pin out.
When I was done I just drove the pin in from the opposite direction.

Actually I'm  as the normal K98 series sight hood just slips off and is not pinned in place. Expanding it with snap ring pliers works or you can just drive it off with a large brass or wood punch.

On most Israeli Mausers there are two holes on either side of the sight ramp, which a pin passes thru and locks the sight hood in place very securely.:jump:

i was actually able to remove the sight hood from the K98k, I gently filed off the peened/flattened sides of the roll pin, tapped out. A pair of reverse pliers easily removed the sight hood.

I now know why thet placed a hood over that front sight blade- it's darn sharp- have the scar to proove it!!!;)

It seem like only the Israeli made versions had two holes either side of the sight hood, one for a pin, the other to adjust the front sight for windage.
The genuine german K98's I've seen had no holes or only one on the side of the sight hood.

thanks for info.
