The new quest is to find an 8mm Carcano with a Star of David on it.

excerpt taken from: http://www.carbinesforcollectors.com/carcano.htm

The Carcano and Israel

Prior to the British withdrawal from Palestine in 1948 Jewish agents were combing Europe for rifles. They were buying anything they could find. A deal was struck for 8mm Carcano carbines and they were stored on an airfield in central Italy which had recently been used by the RAF. This was a relay point for contraband being smuggled by air from Europe. Then a major arms deal was struck with Czechoslovakia for rifles, machine guns, ammunition, pistols, smgs, and aircraft.
By now the State of Israel had been proclaimed and both the USA and Russia were supporting it. Now the Carcass were not needed or wanted. Nightly illegal flights from Bratislava in Slovakia in Dakota (C-47) twin engine aircraft with phony RAF markings and radio call signs were refueling at this air field before flying on to deliver the 98K type 8mm Mausers to Israel. Arab agents were at this time seeking to buy rifles for their forces and were duped into buying the Carcani from the Israeli agents. Some or many of them were tampered with so that they could not be of use once it was discovered that they would blow up. Thus the Arabs helped finance their enemies arms purchases and had a serious morale problem because of it. Some of the 8mm were kept by the Israeli military and are marked with the Star of David.

That is very interesting! I would love to have one of those!

Think of the irony! :) I guess you best bet would be to call "Mean old Mildred" at Springfield Sporters and see if they would look thru their 8mm selection for you...

Yeah, it is very interesting, not sure it's true but cool if it is.

BTW, I picked up an excellent M38 carbine at Crossroads today. It's a 1940 Gardone. That little folding bayo caught my eye. I didn't realize how short they are, barrel is only about 17" I took it apart to see how everything was and it looks great. It may be at least a week before I can post pics, birthday is coming up, come-on digital camera.;)

I have one, It is a neat little rifle. I can't wait until Hornandy's new 6.5 ammo comes out, so I can try it!

Here are my M38's - the carbine is my favorite :)

The author of the Carcano Homepage Emailed the guy at that website and asked him where he heard it.

Supposedly it came from a dealer in NY 30 some-odd years ago, who heard it from someone else, yada, yada.

Probably not true.

Zouave - nice collection - I had no idea you had three now! Have you shot any yet?

I should put up a sticky about aiming the fixed sight M38's and about cleaning cosmo off the stock, bolt disassembly, etc.

I just picked up a 91/38 Short Rifle today which was really caked in cosmo! 3 applications of paint stripper and the stock is still dark with caked in blackish oil. I'll go to the store and get some more paint stripper so I can get down to that really cool Orange Italian Beechwood look.

You can occasionally buy original WWII leather scabbards for those Cavalry Carbines.
