If I was going to make a custom rifle, I would use a 98 Mauser action for its strength and reliabilty, correct? Does anyone know the largest calibre used in a m98 action? .30-06?? Is it possible - for arguments sake - to go bigger?

The largest caliber that I know of being rebarrelled and customized is .416 Rigby. This was for lions and elephants. So I believe the 98 Mauser action is up to a challenge! They are the best actions ever made.

Yeah, big is doable in a 98 action. What chambering did you want to go with?

whichever obscenely large and useless blackpowder calibre looks the best :D

The large-caliber blackpowder loads won't generate near the pressure of the smokeless rounds. A .500 Nitro Express is a huge round and powerful, too, but it won't have the pressures that say, a .458 or a .375 H&H Magnum develop. Schutzenman, correct me if I'm wrong here but I thin k the black powder loadings never developed pressures like the smokeless, especially the necked-up smokeless rounds. Therefore, they should be safe in a bolt action of modern design and strength.

MrSkelington, a Mauser in one of these big calibers would certainly be elegant as well as different from your run-of-the-mill calibers.

Yep, thats the idea behind using blackpowder instead of smokeless. BIGGER! Wheeee!!!

*cough*

I'm still learning as I go though, I think I'll start by buying a M98 action..

If you folks think you are going to buy a surplus mauser 98 action and then drop some massive cartridge in it you are wrong. Even an 06 is a little long and requires some grinding on the front end of the action to get it to work.

Commercial 98 style actions, yes they can be found for a variety of things, but you aren't going to pick up a scuffed up M48 and put anything in it with a cartridge length much longer than 57mm.

Best of Luck,

I've heard of a guy who reworks them to calibers like 50 AE.
Never shot one, but I bet it would be loud.
