I recently came across a pre-ban AR-15. I was wondering what one would be worth. I was told it was a salute gun or something like that. The receiver is silver, not black. It is all original Colt, and includes 2 colt mags. I would like to know what is a reasonable price for one. It is in excellent condition.

How do you tell? And, what is the real difference between an A1 or A2 Model? Probably a stupid question, but I am totally new to the AR15.

Easiest way to tell a stock A1 is it's triangular hand guard and no forward bolt assist. The A2 has a round hand guard and a forward bolt assist. If it is an original Colt it should state A1 or A2 on the receiver. I never heard of a Salute Model Colt AR so if there is such a model it might be worth more.

"real" A1's have the forward assist. Colt civilian production (SP1, Sporter II) mostly doesn't although it appeard on later Sporter II production.

Back before they let me quit playing with M16s, M2 BMGs, M60s and other such toys, I really was not intrested in the civiy side of the AR. On the military side the M16 had no forward assist was a semi auto, the three prong flash suppresser, and even a lighter barrel, the M16A1 was capable or full auto, had a foward assist, most had the birdcage flash suppreser, and a slightey heaver barrel, both had left and right triagale handguards. The M16A2 had a foward assist, builtin brass defelcter, round hand guards, heaver barrel, worse (IMHO) sights, a 3 round burst instead of auto, wighted too much, and fired a less effective round, there is more but that should do. Remember there are exceptions to all rules and the military is real good at this.
Now I am learning from the master (Circuits) more about the non-military side of the AR. Anyway Be carefule with a salute gun, they where made in two ways. Salute's are fired with blanks, some times with normal issue rifles, if the salute team works the bolt after each volley, it's an issue rifle, if not it is a salute rifle, it can have either an inturnel blank adapter, or a dadacated blank barrel. If the reciver is chrome I would check out the barrel real carefully. Even with a removelable adapter, alot of blank use and no barrel cleaning can ruin a barrel. Just my $.02

It must be an A1, because it has a triangular hand guard. Also, I have been told that it has the capability to be made full-auto. Does this help?

Just curious, but if you are new to ARs, why would you want to start off with something like that, if it is what the person says it is, it's a collectable and not something you want to take to the range every weekend, that said, if you are looking to get into the shooting aspect, get a post ban Bushmaster M4, you will have a blast without spending serious cash. As far as capable of full auto, technically speaking, any AR can be made to go full auto, and I really don't find that as a positive selling point. If you are serious about the purchase, the receiver is more than likely pre-ban, which automatically makes the rifle worth $1000 plus. Could you tell us exactly what it says on the receiver, and the prefix or first 3 digits of the serial number?

The guy I know with the gun is out of town for a couple of weeks. I can't see the gun again until he gets back. I'll let you know what I find out when I see it again. As far as Why I would start with this rifle. Well, I really just want to see what this one is worth, and go from there as to whether I want this one or not.

What is his asking price?[IMG]

The guy was told that it is worth $3000. But, he says he'll sell it for $2700. He is wanting to get rid of it, so I think I can get it for $2500 or so. Is that a good price?
have to be gold plated, with diamond studded controls, and come with 6, 30 round mags with real silver plating and platnum followers, before I would give that kind of money for it. If you are getting it to shoot, you can find a much better deal, if you are a collector that will never fire it, thats still too much.

I totally agree with Rew, If you're going to fork out serious cash, you should get a pre-ban HK. You can get a very nice preban Colt, Bushmaster or Olympic Arms for half that price. Check Gunsamerica.com, Gunbroker.com, or Auction arms for pre-ban AR-15s and you'll see what we are talking about.

Thanks for all the info. That looks like the gun, except the receiver is silver. I can't get any pictures of it, the guy traded it for something. Anyway, it was probably overpriced anyway from what everyone is saying.
I would like to know, what is the least expensive Full-Auto weapon that a civilian can own is? I've been told that most of them are upwards of $10,000; is that true?

cheapest full auto would be the mac-10. they are somewhere in the 1000-1500 dollar neighborhood. stens maybe "cheap" as well.... and yes full autos can be up some where near the 10,000 range and beyond...the thompson, and the M16s are near that price range, and can exceed it, depending on condition and configuration. belt fed ones like the M60s are way, way up in price...way past the 10,000 dollar mark
to give you a idea check this out...look at the ones that are transferable....post and dealer ones are completely different animals and can't be sold to regular joe blows.
