well i got my two turk mausers from SOG, they were the 2nd grade the ones with small cracks that can be fixed, the $27.95 ones. well the ones i got are really really rough, the stocks are just beat to hell and back. one of them had a nail through the hand guard holding it together, the front part of the hand guard the wood just fell apart, the cleaning rod was bent pretty bad too and on the same rifle the recoil lug is totally gone. the action is good and all the serial numbers matched. the other i am going to try to fix the stock. the butt plate is totally worn to just about nothing, the hand guard has a BIG crack all the way down it, the action on this one is ok but i am going to try to work it out,the cleaning rod on this one is bent too, the serial numbers DO NOT match at all. All in all i would say that these are the bottom of the barrel.
Also i was wondering if anyone knows where i could get a good replacement stock for the turkish mauser M38 and a butt plate for a good price. Thanks for the help.
P.S. If anyone one else ordered any from SOG good luck:)

Numrich or Tennessee Gun for the stock and other parts. Matching numbers is good, don't see that often on these. Most of the cleaning rods do tend to be bent and the butt plates well worn. The screw heads holding on the butt plate are frequently worn so bad you have to dremel a slot in them to get them off. I'd say do what you can with the stocks or replace them as a last resort. Good metal and bores is usually the main concern with these and it sounds like you did ok in that area.
Edited: Oops on the bores. How are they?

The bores are real good and the rifling is really good on both of them. all of the metal seems to be good as far as i can tell right now but all i know is i am going to have a lot of work cut out for me for a while.:D but that is the fun part:)

Century Arms had unfinished Mauser stocks for sale pretty cheap I picked one up myself for $15 I think, maybe it was cheaper. No hardware but you get the stock and handguard. They say they are for 98 Mausers. I'll take a look at mine and see if it will work on a Turk 38, I think it will.
You did real good getting a matching bolt, out of dozens of Turk mausers I've had my hands on I never once saw one with a matching bolt.

yeah these stocks at century are for the M38 Turks. They are cut exactly to 38 specs. Pretty nice wood too, I just noticed how nice and grainy this stock is when I took these pics. The stock is dirty right now and unfinished but in perfect shape. This puppy will glow when I smooth it out and oil it. I think the butt disk and forward band spring may have a tendancy to be a bitch to install. Not sure though because I never tried it. Heck I may pick up another one of these stocks if they still have them and buy a cheapo grade Turk myself.
If you decide to repair the stock you have, check out my stock repair tutorial over in the restoration forums. Stock repair is relatively easy and fun to do. Then again if Century has these stocks still go for it, it will increase the value of your rifle quite a bit. There's not a ding to be found on this stock.
I put the stock next to a VG Turk 38 I have for comparison purposes. Everything lines up exactly. The stock on the VG Turk is semi finished, I still need to work on it too.

Correct, my rep says these are Turk 38 stocks. J&G Sales also has them 3@ 19.95 or 1@ 24.95
frenchman, sorry to hear about your bad experience.
I have about 7 Grade 3 Turk 38's from SOG. They were 29.99 ea, but none were as bad as what you described. All my had hairline cracks that were so minor that it didn't matter if you fixed them or not. Some had cosmo and some were dry. All had handguards. One is even brand new in unfinished condition. I've never had any problems with these and didn't even think twice about ordering them.
I think even Guinny got a couple that were pretty good. SOG must be getting down to the bottom of the barrel or these are the worst of the customer returns.

I got mine yesterday from SOG and it looks good. No cracks in the stock at all. One area that looks repaired on the butt, but other than that, it is intact. It's my first, so I am pleased.
I love C&R

Welcome to the boards. And hey for under $28 bucks what did you expect? For that price they are worth it if all you got out of it was an action. Man that's cheap for cost! Wow!
Looks like Redstar's tip on the new stocks is the way to go. BTW that metal doughnut is swaged togehter like a big rivit. How one would go about getting it apart is unknow to me. I think it would be destroyed possibly to do so. Although a new center tube could be welded or brazed to the old side and then rivited over to assmeble it I suppose.

Yes it is a big gromet... You can drill out the center tube and save the two washers... you then get a brass tube of the same demention and compress the ends (or flare them)... :bye:
