I have a 1987 Bronco with 157k miles. It runs like a top, but there is this annoying speedometer cable noise. Is there a way to lube it without reaching under the dash? It has done this for years.
Ooh, one more question. It is the 5.8 HO (351w) with a factory holley carb. The choke works well in cold weather, but is faulty and nearly drowns you with gas fumes in the warm weather. Any advice? Thanks!

I think it's JC Whitney that has a pressure adapter that screws into the cable from the tranny. You use a greasegun to pump the grease through the adapter.

Is your carb a "Autolite" Holly, or is it a Holly? Two or four barrel? Is it one that you can adjust the float from the outside, without taking the carb apart? It almost sounds like your float is out of adjustment. If there is a screw with a locknut on top of the floatbowl, move your truck to level ground. Leave your engine running. After the engine is warm, remove the screw on the side of the floatbowl. Loosen the... Damn! It's been a long time. If I remember correctly, it's the screw that's the locking part, and you turn the nut to adjust the float. I could have this backwards. At any rate, unscrew which ever does the locking, and turn the other until fuel just starts to dribble from the hole in the side of the bowl. Put the plug back in and lock the adjustment down. Be very careful! When you make this adjustment, you're going to spill fuel! Keep a fire extengisher handy!

If the floats are plastic, it might not be a bad idea to replace them. They tend to absorb gasoline over the years, making them gradually sink lower in the float bowls. There also may be metal replacements available.

If they're brass, they could have pinholes in them. Remove them and shake them to hear if they have fuel in them. Replace them if they have any in them.

If the choke has a plastic cover look at the cover it should have little marks that have richer on one end of the scale and lean on the other. Loosen the three screws and turn it a couple of lines toward lean. In the winter you will want to turn it back to where it was. Also check the linkage to make sure that there are no binds.

LMAO!
let me rephrase this...'cause "I'm in the mood".

Is there an "easy fix". Fuck, the world is full of quick and easy fixes. Ignore it.

If for some reason you can't do that, take the great pains upon yourself and with "heroic" effort, reach up under the dash and go behind the speedometer and disconnect the cable leading to it.
To truly be a "hero", crawl under the vehicle and disconnect the speedometer cable wherever it connects to something, like the transfer case...

Disconnect the choke in warm weather.
Might have to get under the hood tho, so just might want to ignore it.

PS:
The above wasn't a commentary on any individual personally.
It was just a "quick fix" suggestion for a "quick fix" and "painless" world.

Congoloid, my big hands won't fit under the dash, otherwise I would simply replace it. Dillweed.
