Given the surge of interest and the PM request of a member I thought I'd share this list of K98k manufacturing codes. It's not all of the codes but they are the "Confirmed" codes as far as the source, Olson's book on Mausers, has listed.
ax = Feinmechanische Werke, G.m.b.H., Erfurt
bcd = Gustloff Werke, Werk Weimar, Weimar
bnz = Steyr-Daimler-Puch, A.-G., Steyr, Austria
byf = Mauser Werke, A.-G., Oberndorf
ce = J.P. Sauer & Sohn, Suhl (markings on some are script rather than block letters.)
dot = Waffenwerke Bruenn, A.-G., Brno, Czechoslovakia
dou = Waffenwerke Bruenn, A.-G., Werk Bystrica
duv = Berlin-Luebecker Maschinenfabriken, Werk Luebeck
S/42k = Early codes for Mauser-Werke, A.-G., Oberndorf a./N, 1934
S/42G = Early codes for Mauser-Werke, A.-G., Oberndorf a./N, 1935
S/42= Early code for Mauser-Werke, A.-G., Oberndorf a./N
42= Early code for Mauser-Werke, A.-G., Oberndorf a./N

The rifles made for the SS were made by Styer-Daimler-Puch. Their ordanance code is "bnz".The rifles were made at concentration camps under SS supervision.

I tell you what, I wish I had the money to get one of each arsenal code when I was there. It would make a heck of a collection. :cool:

The "S/27" code Mausers were made at Feinmechanische Wereke Gmbh, in Erfurt; that's their early code in the middle 1930's.They then went to "27" and then to "ax"

So with the stamping of 1937 this is a pre-war too. I got it last night, looked it over real quick and was constantly worried about the wife walking in. My rifles are all at mom and dad's right now til I bring them back (had house for sale). Once they're here, it will blend in.

No.
Welcome to the forums scottymetz! :jump: I looked at over 100 of these rifles and I saw some of the BNZ marked weapons. I did not see any SS marks.

Hey Guinny_Ire! That's hilarious that you have to hide your gund from the wife. I do too. I wait till she goes off to bed, then whip out a pile of rifles to look over. It's getting comical the things I have to do to conceal my new acquisitions from her.

I have a k98 made by Sauer build code S147, dated 1938, but I'm puzzled by what appears to be imperial german eagles, as well as Nazi eagles on the receiver. Any ideas?

Got a "bnz 4"; suppose that means a bnz of 1944 manufacture. Are all bnz considered SS manufacture? Also have a 33/40 "dot". Both are all matching nos. Only detractor with the 33/40 is a dark bore.

Only some of bnz coded 98k's are speculated as being "ss" issue.
Is your 33/40 a 41 or a 42?

Actually, I believe it is a 1940. I'll have to look at it again.
