I bought my mags in the E. German pouches, but didn't like them. Then I thought, I've got a set of Israeli webbing. Israelis use Galils. Galils are AKs in 5.56mm. 5.56mm is close to 5.45mm. So, grabbed the webbing, removed the AR15 mags and sure enough, the E. German AK74 mags fit. There isn't a lot of engagement in the velcro, but the flaps close and the setup is much better than the E. German pouches. So, if you want a good setup, see if you can find surplus Israeli webbing.

i just got a chinese Ak 3 mag chest pouch, and fits the european mags real good (someone said it wont cuz of the back ridge)
and it has 4 smaller pouchs (2 on each side)
im able to put in up to 6 boxes of rounds in the pouchs, but in one pouch i put 10-15 shotgun shells 12 ga -- all that for $15
(strangely its easier getting into it than getting out)

ill probably get another and cut off the small pouchs and sew on some webbing to attach some alice gear and maybe dye it a darker color

and on the 8th day GOD made the AK-47 and saw that this was good

That's why the 6 mag chest pouches are better,IMHO. You could get them for 10 bucks a few years back, but I saw one at a gun show here in TN 3 months ago and the fool was asking $40!! For that kind of dough spend 20 more dollars and get one from Blackhawk or Eagle or London Bridge Trading. Mine is Chi-Com, but I can vouch for Blackhawk's. They are GRRRREAT!! I have a Chi-Com only 'cuz it was $8 when I bought it, and I'm cheap....

I saw some six pocket ak magazine pouch at a gunshow a few weeks ago for $20. It has three pockets per side and a shoulder sling.
I think I get one at the next show. and report back about how well made(or not) and get the address of the company.

I lucked into one of the Chinese chest pouches also. Some of the small pockets will hold 5 rnd mags (which will hold 10 rnds if modified) and you can also carry GI borecleaner, pull-through, and patches in one. However, 3 mags are not enough.

where do you get the 6-mag pouchs? got a pic? i dont think ive ever seen one

i cant imagine the weight of 6 AK mags fully loaded, my 3 mag pouch with 3 unloaded AK mags and 3 boxes of ammo in the extra pockets was heavy but not unbareable, i cant imagine what 6-8 fully loaded Ak mags feels like on your person, let alone on your chest
anyone know how much that weighs?

on my set up 3 mags + 1 in the gun is 120 rounds, if the problem isnt solved, dead, or running for the hills then its time to hit the road, dont think a few extra mags will make much of a difference
but then i could be wrong, usually am http://www.ak-47.net/akcgi/smile.gif

Hey guys,

you are right about one thing, six AK mags on your chest are heavy and hurt like crazy if you take a tumble all loaded up. I still use them but modified the straps to allow a little more adjustment and all to fit a more healthy american. It's funny , while on a little outing and some stream crossing these suckers soak up water and fill up as well. We sat for a breather and leaned forward to check our boot laces and clean them off and drowned our boots again from the chest pouches. That was a real wet day for us! you should try stream crossings all loaded up. Its a real challenge and makes you appreciate a freaking boat!!!

Also I use a Alice web gear set up with pouches for AK's added. It will take 2 AK mags great but loading three is a problem. The mag lock up tabs will hang up on each other making it hard to extract a fresh mag without pulling out 2 at the same time.

Treadhead;
I have the same problem getting my mags out of the pouches like you have. They are alot easier to extract when inserted with the rounds up, exposed.
I know, I know. Now they are open to dirt, water, snow, etc. but they are easier to get out.
For what it's worth.

Yo Treadhead: Take some 550 cord and cut off 4-5 inches. Pull out the inner strings, then tie some big knots in both ends and melt them with a lighter. Slide the floor-plates out, then slide the 550 cord in, snapping the floor-plate back. You can then grasp the loops you just made when extracting a mag without pulling all 3 out. Also, according to my completely un-scientific calculations(I killed the bathroom scale awhile ago)6 mags in a chest pouch weigh about as much as a stamped rec. Poly-Tech with spike bayo, but without mag. A little heavy, but they flop less in a chest pouch than in the canteen covers I also carry mags in.(3 per canteen cover. A trick I picked up from a LRRP's Vietnam memoirs I read.)

THANKS,

Its a MAK-90, USA internals(FSE 2ndGen im told), Orig. Bulgarian plastic(from KVAR), Bulgarian F. site from Jimmy@Global, US 74type comp from Jimmy, and Kalashnikov USA scope mnt. The mag in the rifle is a Bulgarian waffle mag from KVAR.

Dons Gun Shop / Black Adder in Ft. Myers Florida did the work...they Park'ed everything @ the same time...the Pic dosnt do justice to the matching Park on the gun and Mags, drum, etc...

thanks for the compliment.

Believe it or not Chinese troops were taught that the 6 pocket AK chest pouch was the closest thing to a flak jacket they would ever see..on a skinny China Boy from the country, its better than nothing. Heavy and not as common in the US now as before the import ban. 3 mag pouches have replaced them currently but I have Chinese green canvas 3 mag pouches with shoulder strap that goes over the shoulder and around the neck like the soviet shoulder bag model (Like your wifes purse for you married guys) wooden toggles on the 3 pockets with 2 pockets also big enough for 2 US first aid pouch bandages. I have only seen them sold locally by a surplus dealer named Niles Johnson of Bloomington Indiana. He sells them for $12.00 ea. With shipping probobly around $15.00 bucks. He had some this last weekends big show, though I dont have a clue other than China where he gets them or how many he has left. Wish I had a picture for you guys...P.S. Dang Rob thats a sweet toy you got!
