I don't like the brown plastic one that comes with the Polish laminate set.

I don't see why they can't make a laminated wood pistol-grip but all European sets seem to be made of plastic.

The Russians made a Laminated pistol grips for their AK-47 and RPK. I have a few but there not for sale. I have not seen any for sale in a while. Try AA-OK or Global.

They made two variations that I can account for. One has a wide grip and was made for the milled type 3 Soviet AK-47. The other was slimmer and was used for early AKMs, AK-74/AKS-74, and most commonly on RPKs. Both are smooth and uncheckered. I have one of each and might consider selling the wide one in the future. But these things are neither common nor cheap.

I have a few photos of these in my laminated wood section, at my web site at http://www.tantal.kalashnikov.guns.ru. Please check the site if you have a chance.

The thinner grip, common to stamped Russian receiver AK's, was seen on only the very earliest AKM's, but was used on most AKMS rifles until about the mid- 1970's. It was also used on the AKS-74, RPK, RPKN, RPK-74, and RPKS-74N until about the same period. I have never seen any of these on the fixed stock AK-74.

They are getting harder to find.

Just a idea...the Maadi "thumbhole" stock will not only cut down to a standard (laminated) mil-spec butt stock, but leaves a pistol grip that can be finished to shape (will need a hole drilled through it) that will also be laminated. I've reworked a couple of these, and was well satisfied. You'll need the mounting hardware for the grip, of course.
