I was rummaging around in a pile of Chinese chest pouches at a gunshow and mixed in with the AK and SKS pouches was a rig for 20 round .308 mags. It is very similar to the AK and SKS chest pouches, even down to the wooden, conical ended buttons to close the individual pockets. It is made of the same green canvas, partially rubberized, and has five mag pockets and two smaller accessory pockets at each end. It has the usual shoulder straps and rear tie. The back is imprinted with Chinese characters and the number "78."

Does anyone have any idea what this thing is for. To my knowledge, the Chinese don't use anything that would take a 20 round .308 mag. Export? The M14 clones for the US market? I dunno. Any ideas?

Thanks

My guess is the Chinese Type 79 sniping rifle, which is a copy of the Dragunov.
A ten round Dragunov mag is about the same size as a 20 rd. M-14 mag., maybe a little smaller.

Another possibility is for old WWII stock like the Browning BAR M1918-A2 left over from
the Chinese Nationalist troops in 1949.
Maybe they made them for use by militia or
second line defense units ?
