View Full Version : I can't see my Cobra's dot on a bright day

I bought one of the Cobra sights based on all the favorable comments here. Its quality appears excellent, as was Tantal's service.

But I've now tried to sight it in on two different days at different ranges and was unable to see the dot when on a light target in bright sunlight. It is pretty frustrating. If I aim into the shadows, I can see it okay, but if I try to move it onto the white target, it completely vanishes. I thought that maybe the batteries were low (although they are nearly new), but when I try it at home at night (just normal room light) it works fine and can be made overly bright. Do these sights work in bright light against light-colored targets? Any hints? I still like it, but its usefulness will be limited to evenings, etc. if I can't figure out a solution to this. I was using the hood and had it turned up with the T-bar and dot.

One other minor (imaginary?) concern - it seems like my T-bar may be tilted a little to the right - but this may very well be an optical illusion (the mount, sight adjustments, etc. make the scope asymetrical, so it it tough to really know if I'm holding it straight. And when I switch to my left eye, the "problem" mostly goes away - so I don't really think there's anything wrong. But I figured I'd throw this out just to see if I'm the only one experiencing this.

DougB, I have a couple of Cobras and while the dot appears dim in bright light I can still pick it up easily. Of course, I use the rubber hood, dot only and use the 3.6v lithium AA batteries. These might make a difference.

Hey Doug....The Kobra site is kinda hard to see in bright daylight, and I can see how it could get washed out on a white target. On a dark target, sunlight doesn't matter. The tilt comes from where your head is positioned on the stock. If your head is canted to the right, the reticle will "appear" off, but with the holo-site, the point of impact will still be the same(i.e. no matter where the reticle or your head is, the bullet is going where the dot is). Try different cheek welds to get the reticle where you want it. HTH.

If you have not double checked the voltage on the batteries, do so. If those are the original Russian batteries they are notorious for not being fully charged. If you look further done on this board you will see a thread for Cobra batteries for $4.59. I used my Cobra for an entire week in the Texas sun and never had trouble with sight illumination. Also try to train tourself to use both eyes, this will feel strange at the beginning but once you get used to it you will dig it!!!
Good luck, hate to hear someone having trouble with this sight, it is so cool when it all comes together.
