In my ongoing quest to build the ultimate tactical carbine based on a MAK 90, I have designed and built a couple of new accessories-- an extended mag release and a "speedwell" for fast mag changes (one of the few weaknesses of the AK design, at least for competition).

As you can see the system has already been put through its paces at two tactical carbine matches and plenty of range drill-- it works very well. I can do a "tactical reload" (mag change "at the gun" with retention) in about 1/2 the time of an unmodified AK and faster than any AR, heheheh...

thats pretty cool
how did you make all that ? could maybe make some $$$ if you made and sold those

Ok, I like your system, but faster than... an ar?? Ok finger comes off the trigger, hit the mag release while the left hand is alread bringing the next mag up???

I meant that to be somewhat tongue-in-cheek-- it really depends on who is doing the reload. In a "tactical reload" you already have the new mag in hand and quickly switch it "at the gun" with the old mag, retaining the old mag and any remaining ammo. This assures that the gun is empty (no mag) for the shortest period of time. Dropping the old mag to the ground then grabbing a new mag is a "speed reload" and is not allowed by IDPA rules (the ones we use during tactical carbine matches) if any ammo remains in the old mag. The good thing about the AK is that you don't have to take your finger off of the trigger for either type of reload...

Cool, Mag changes are my weak point. What would you consider a good mag change exercise to hone the skill?? Shame there isn't an easy way to make an MPEG or something of the most efficient way to swap mags..

Xebec - Have you considered beveling that mag well and possibly welding it into place?
The release is NICE. VERY NICE http://www.ak-47.net/akcgi/biggrin.gif
Man it's great to talk about AK's again...

FreeAmerican-- The way I do a "tactical reload" with the AK is this-- grasp the fresh mag baseplate between the thumbpad/lower palm portion of your left hand (reverse these instruction if you are a southpaw) and the last three fingers (middle, ring, small), leaving your thumb and index finger free. Make sure the mag is facing forward (bullets pointing forward). Move your left hand to the rifle, grasping the front of the old mag with your index finger and the release with the thumb, then release the mag and rock it out of the gun while retaining it with thumb and index finger. Now push the new mag into place in a slight rearward rocking motion. Secure the old mag and ammo in a pocket, pouch, tucked shirt, etc. It takes some practice but sounds harder than it really is. Practice this dry 20-30 times a day and you can do it in less than 2-3 seconds (drawing from a military mag pouch will obviously take longer). Once you practice this a few times with an unmodified gun you will see why I built these accessories http://www.ak-47.net/akcgi/wink.gif.
Gr8-- It is aluminum, so welding this version to the gun is problematic. Actually the mounting system is very secure and requires no modifications to the gun. It is beveled-- kinda hard to tell in some of the photos, but look carefully at #4 and you can see the bevel.

BTW-- one thing you might want to do is to "slick" about 6 mags for competition or practice. This involves carefully filing away the rough edges that catch on various portions of the reciever while reloading-- just bevel the edges. Another spot that often needs a little work is at the front-lower partion of the rails. The rails widen at the front of the reciever where they are welded to the shell, and often have a bit of a flange at the lowest spot that interferes with mag insertion if the mag is canted either to the right or left-- field strip your rifle and check this out. You can tell if this is a problem because sometimes the mag wont snap in under the release unless you move the mag from side to side.

What did you make the mag well/quich release out of? Was their allot of machining involved?

Steve-- the well is made from aluminum "angle" and "block" stock, and the release is made from oil-hardening tool steel (hardened and tempered). The well required some mill work but I have alternative plans that require none. The release required extensive mill work, and the pin was made on my lathe. I am cureently talking to a fellow about aluminum investment casting to manufacture the well for a reasonable price. I'll keep the board posted.

The Senate hearings demonstrated illegal IRS lawbreaking as everyday and commonplace. Below is very common:
° Section 3705 requires any IRS notice to include the name and telephone number of an IRS agent to contact. Most IRS notices contain no name making them fraudulent.
° Section 6001 & 6011 says you only obey regulations, not what IRS letters, or what some IRS agent says
° The IRS uses Section 6331(d) in many of their extortionary notices. That has its implementing regulation in Title 27 part 70, alcohol, tobacco and firearms. Most Americans are not engaged in any alcohol, tobacco and firearms production.
° No one can be proven liable for the income tax or fabricated IRS penalties or the underlying tax liability and you can demand proof of such liability according to Code Section 6330(c)(2)(B).
° IRS "penalties" can not be imposed on anyone absent of a court order see 26 USC 7401, 7402, 7403 and IRM 546 section 19(b)(2)
° IRS employees/criminals have no authority to send out fraudulent demands or notices for money since it’s outside of their delegated authority pursuant to 7608.
° IRS extortionary notices are never attested to, sworn to, or have a declaration attached pursuant to 26 USC 6065 and authentication under Seal oF District Director
° No IRS employees have delegation orders allowing them to send out demands, notices or any other threatening communications through the US mail
° IRS agents ignore requests for initial "examinations" and "interviews" as provided for in Publications 1 & 5
° No lien for taxes pursuant to Section 6321 and 6322 are possible because there’s no legal assessment.
° IRS agents don’t send out statutory "Notice and Demand" for payment of the taxes at issue as required by Code Sections 6203, 6321, and 6331
Since no IRS Agent/extortioner has the authority to fine or penalize any citizen without a judicial trial (as they attempt to do with your bogus notices and letters), they are guilty of violating:
TITLE 18-Sec. 872. Extortion by officers or employees of the United States
USC 18, § 242. Deprivation of rights under color of law
TITLE 18, United States Code Section 1341. Frauds and swindles
TITLE 18--Sec. 876. Mailing threatening communications
TITLE 26, Sec. 7214 STATUTE (a)Unlawful acts of revenue officers or agents
TITLE 26, Sec 6304 harassment and abuse of taxpayers.
According to the taxpayer bill of rights and Air Transport Ass’n of America v. Dept. of Trans., 900 F2d. 369, 376 (D.C. Cir. 1990) "a party has the right to notice and a hearing before being forced to pay a monetary penalty."

Like the tax info. I've got a close buddy who has never paid 'em, besides sales tax.

It is said that great minds run along the same channels. I located this the other day. http://www.flashdistributor.com/magrel.html
You have a very good idea there, and I would think it would be marketable. There are a lot of great inventions that the inventors have sitting in there desks because they have no concept of marketing. Obviously dealing with AK's you do not have a wide consumer market to approach. You have a nitch market. I attempted to locate your e-mail and pass a couple of ideas along to you but there is no e-mail for you listed. If you would like you may e-mail me at merlewhite@hotmail.com
