Has this been done. I understand that the saiga is built on the rpk receiver. If you get the longest barrel they make and have the conversion done so that it has the pistol grip, add the rpk buttstock. Should work no?

Saiga barrel is thinner than an RPK. That might affect your ability to find a bipod that fits. Also, Im no expert but I thought RPK receivers had the reinforcment hump on the trunnion, looks like a bulge. So no, Saigas are not RPKs, VEPRs are. No? But it would look damn close, except the barrel.

edit: FYI: True RPKs have a 23" barrel.

NO not all RPK's are fullauto. The military models are fullauto of course but you can find the excellent VEPR thats basically a variant of the RPK.

If you want to do it right stay FAR away from the Siaga as an RPK platform. The Siaga receiver is the most current AK-74 design for the Russian civilians/law enforcement. Hence the lack of dimples. The AK-74 is a lightweight gun.

The VEPR is an RPK in disguise. You will want to purchase a VEPR in the cal of your choice.

Depending on wich VEPR caliber you choose the barrel length will be affected. Some barrels are longer than others depending on the cal.

The 7.62 barrel is 20.5" long.

The true RPK barrel is 23.5" long.

So you will need to make an barrel extention that is 3" long. Or find a correct length barrel (very hard to do right now).

Then find a bipod.

Then find the correct barrel parts that take a cleaning rod.

Find an RPK cleaning rod.

Weld the back of the VEPR receiver square so you can install RPK furniture.

Re-paint finished assembled gun.

Install furniture making sure you keep your USA parts count correct.

THere is allot of custom work needed as you can see.

THis is what I plan to do when I can pull everything together. Not an easy task money wise. It will end up being an $1,000 ++ gun by the time I am done.
