I have this NHM-90, with a 16 inch barrel. A while back, at a gunshow, someone was selling Romanian PSL barrels, and I picked on up. It required machining but I got the Romanian PSL barrel on the NHM-90. Okay, what do I have? The PSL barrel is 20-24 inches approximately in length, (I don't want to go to the safe and measure exactly). Would this quailfy as an RPK?

The RPK barrel is 20 inches and it is a NHM-91....

Federal Arms had some long bbls. advertised for the 7.62x39 soviet/Euro pattern AK's that I'm pretty sure were 23". I've got some old catalogs in my junk drawers that pre-date Klinton but I'm certain it's near the top. Probably from '98-'00 when they were available--kinda wish I'd bought one!

I wouldn't call it an RPK, but then again, I consider my NHM an RPK due to the heavy bbl. & integral bipod ( I can only grin after such a search for- an original 'pod!!)---as far as length goes, with one of the longer brakes (AK74 / Krinkov style), the length is very close to the original overall length.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the RomakIII / PSL bbl. skinny like a Dragonov bbl. ?? I would also assume the Fed.Arm. AK bbl. would be as well.

So I do have a RPK type. On my reciever I have NHM-90 stamped on the side, and the gun originally came with a 16 inch barrel. The Romanian PSL barrel is fairly thick, I needed to lathe it down quite a bit to make the barrel fit in the trunnion block, and plus the barrel was made out of harden steel so the job took twice as long as thought it would.

On SKSMAN.com

http://www.sksman.com/parts/parts2.html

I see the PSL barrel that I bought, thank god I didn't spend $400 on the barrel. Did the Romanians really make barrels for 7.62x39 or trying to pawn off 7.62x54 as able to take 7.62x39. I'll get around to posting pics as soon as I dig up my digital camera.

I feel after I put on the heavier barrel, that one, the gun no longer has kick, it just kinda nudges you after you pull the trigger. Two, it hits noticeably harder (how much velocity gain does one get with an extra 4 inches of barrel?). Three, its heavier than heck and its probably no longer is considered an assault rifle as opposed to main battle rifle (had to take off my bipod, but I'm a big guy, the weight really doesn't bother me).

Four the groups have noticeably tightened up, and I do believe its time for some optics (I've noticed all special forces use some kind of optics. I'm an iron sights man myself, I feel if you have good fundamentals and can shoot with iron sights, you can pick up any gun and be accurate to a certain degree. The tactical sight from Leupold claims it has 1.5x faster target acquistion than iron sights, hard to believe but I concede that it is probably true.) I'm thinking about getting some russian optics from:

http://www.nightvisionweb.com/

because all those russian optics have a probably fun to play with range finder, and is parallaxed for 7.62x39. Will the fact that I have four extra inches of barrel mean that bullet drop marking on the optics is rendered useless? Do you guys have any optics for your RPKS? Any words of Advice? Also I don't have a side rail because I don't like drilling holes in my reciever, if I mess up, I'm out of my RPK, and I can't get another because I live in Nazi California. How was your guys experience putting on the side-rail? Is there any no drill kits out there so I don't have to drill my reciever?

Where can I get new furniture for the front end of Romanian PSL, or am I stuck with that cheap wood?

Anyone from California? Does that exchanging parts for US made parts apply in California?

Thanks for the Feedback

You put a Romak 3 barrel in 762x54r on your 762x39 rec. with 762x39 bolt and it actually fires?

Well it was advertised to be 7.62x39, I don't know how that can be, but I've never had a jam or any problems.....crazy....maybe testament to the durability and versatility of the ak action??? heh heh...maybe.

K-var has PSL forends. Didn't you need a longer gas piston? I'm pretty sure the kits that Federal Arms was selling came with a bolt carrier that had a longer piston.

I thought RPKs had a 23" barrel, thats what all my books say anyhow.

RPK-74 and RPK 23.5" barrels compared to a AK-74 16" barrel

specops,
Post some pics if possible. I'd like to see what you have built.

Hey Timkel, if you ever want to let that 5.45 RPK go, give me a heads up! I know you probably wont, but that thing rocks! It was my computer wallpaper for the longest time.:)

I have a question, aren't bipods of limited use on the RPK when you want accuracy? I would think, having the bipod deployed and all that weight resting on the barrel would give you shots all over the paper? Thoughts?

While i've had decent results with bipods, with the RPK it's more a novelty IMHO. They're cool. The real use of RPK's as light-weight squad-auto's requires the 'pod to sustain good rips in a prone or rested situation on full-auto. I wouldn't have an "RPK" that didn't accept the 'pod. They just complete the rifle.
