In Shotgun News issue 11-1-02, on the bottom of page 76, an ad from Inter Ordnance has:

"RPK barrel assy. Romanian made complete with trunnion, bipod, front & rear sight and gas port. $49.95."

No mention of condition of bore and I assume caliber is 7.62. I know these guys have been hit or miss (mostly miss) on the condition and service of RPK kits they have sold in the past. Anyone on the board have bought from this recent offering?

Is the RPK gas tube longer than a standard AK? I'm thinking of putting this barrel on front of a SAR-1 and replacing the butt stock with a RPK club butt. Or I have a OOW universal reciever that I've been waiting for a Krink kit from K-var to arrive for over a month. Does the holes in a standard AK line up with the RPK trunnion? What's the feasibility of either project, am I missing something?
Thanks,
Bob

I think RPK truns are a bit wider than normal. If you have a pic of a real RPK, notice how it bulges out at the trun? I think its because its wider, not sure though. Anyone else? Id love to know the bore condition on those but at that great price I think I already know the answer:(

I looked at the interord Rpk barrels at the Tulsa show last weekend and they were ragged out. If anyone remembers what the bores looked like in the $49 broomhandles about 10 yrs ago then you will know what these looked like. Very Poor. I did see some barrel assy.s for $80 that good bores. I think Northridge had these but I'm not 100% sure, looked like thier set up but it was at the end of the day and I could be mistaken.

Question: Can you pull an RPK barrel out of it's trunion and press it into a standard AK trunion?

I have a RPK and the gas tube off my AKM fit it, the only difference between that and a AK is that the RPK looks like a AK on steroids. as for trunions.... a standard AK trunion should fit a RPK barrel, mine looks to have a regular AKM trunion, built on a OOW receiver....I believe the only reason real RPK trunions are beefed up is for continuous and sustained automatic firing.....which of course, these will never be.

Yes, you can mount an RPK barrel in a standard AKM trunion. The RPK trunion was designed for extream conditions, stuff we never do. The tube question depends on the manufacturer. For example I have a romanian RPK tube that won't fit a Bulgarian and visa versa. If you need a new barrel, let me know. It would still be a good idea to get the I.O. front end for the barrel parts alone. Individualy they will cost a ton of money from other places.

I was planning to just mill/grind the two sides off the trunion so it would fit a non-RPK receiver. Shouldn't that work fine?

What is the story with the new barrels Brick? Mine, from an I/O kit from a year or two ago, isn't pretty but should do. I guess new would be better.

I have heard that Global Trades is supposed to have new US made barrels in 5.45,5.56 and 7.62 and in both 16.25" and 24" lengths in the woeks. But no word on just when. The used barrels would be a deal just for the parts, in anticapation of the new barrels.

My smith said he figured he could make and chamber one from a barrel blank for about $150. Hopefully the Global ones will be less.

This has me thinking that rather than building it in 7.62, why not 5.45 or 5.56? How much else would need to be changed besides the bolt?

That's a darn good price for a custom barrel. Now I want one in 9x39mm (necked up 7.62).

I got one of these for parts. From what I can tell, the barrels are total crap. Little rifling left, major throat erosion and I can push a .30 cal slug into the muzzle end with my finger... Great deal if you're looking for parts; waste of money if you want the barrel.

Sorry it took so long to get back, I was deer hunting. The barrel I was talking about is a stainless I had made up. I can't afford to build my project the way I want to, so I decided to sell my barrel. I wouldn't mill the trunion, someone (can't seem to remember who) told me it would weaken the trunion. My barrel cost me about double your smiths price.

I got to go through all of the RPK barrels on the Northridge table at the Phx. SAR show. The rifling looked very distinct, the bores bright with no apparent flaking.

I even gauged some with a 180 GR BT .308 bullet. It didnt reach to the ogive. (which indicates minimal wear). There was no way to check the throats though.

Some had the rear sight on them. (Inter ord ones had been removed).
