View Full Version : Does anybody use a sling for anything else other than carrying the rifle?

I know that there are specialized sling that allow one to "wear" a rifle, but I've not seen any such products for the Kalashnikov rifles.

Does anyone think that it would be desirable to have a specialized sling for the Kalashnikov rifle, either to enable one to securely "wear" the rifle while moving about or to stead the rifle while shooting for bullseye accuracy?

I see from the English translation of the Kalashnikov rifle, that Warsaw Pact soldiers did use the sling to steady their rifle when firing in full-auto mode from an off-shoulder position.

From what you describe, you might want to look into a 'Ching' sling from several manufacturers and distributors. This is the sling originally designed for the AR15 that allows the user to 'wear' it and have it in many positions based on where you insert your head (so to speak). If you haven't seen it, it's pretty hard to describe, but it's a mix between the H&K MP5 tactical sling and a standard 'carry' sling.

You can find some nylon webbing and materials at your local surplus store to make one that will work very well and at a reduced cost, at that.

This sling orientation allows you to carry it exactly like an 'over-the-shoulder' carry sling, but when you want to have the gun in front of you in a 'port-arms' ready position, you remove the rifle from your shoulder and put one of the loops around your neck and down your back. Then, when you release the gun, it drops to point at the ground about 1 ft in front and 1 ft to the left (with right-hand folks) and is immediately easy to grab and put into an off-hand firing stance.

When you bring it up to your shoulder, the loop of sling around your back tightens and runs from your neck to the front sling mount, the rear sling is tight under your firing arm, and attaches to the rear sling mount on the buttstock. This forms a triangle of sorts that I've found to be very stable for all shooting positions, with the exception of prone (loop the sling across your left front forearm until it pulls tightly against your neck).

In all, once you've seen it, you can make it - and nothing works as well once you've used it. Hope this helps.

I've used a standard sling with the "loop" end on the front swivel and the other end on the buttstock. With the loop at the right size, I could improve on the hasty sling idea by sticking my left arm through the loop and getting quite steady support.

It got even better when I added a produce department rubber band to the loop. Cram it back against my bicep, and it would hold through half a mag most of the time.

I used this in both bullseye and 3-gun competitions and found it quite helpful.

Hello, I've alway liked the standar ak sling, over the left shoulder butt up,totes nicelyyet comes up fast and locks in a natural manner. I've also draped the rifle across the chest, sling over the neck when lugging a pack.

KYoon, don't get too wrapped up in the bells and whistles that come with firearms and military accessories. Most of the time, simple is best! The sling that works for me is like the padded M-60 sling. It's easy to adjust one-handed and I can easily carry my AK (or any other type of rifle) in whatever position I need. You can make a real decent sling with a couple keepers, a moveable pad, and a length of web. The thing you might want to do is get a metal clip for the front sling loop. The AK gets real hot on full auto or even just fast semi-auto and can burn through nylon or cotton. Just make sure you wrap the metal loop with 90-mile an hr tape or electricians tape to keep it quiet!

Try this...take a General Purpose carry strap from a 2-quart canteen and snap BOTH hooks onto the buttstock swivel. Adjust it to fit over your neck and shoulder. IF you must release the AK to switch to a transitional weapon, etc. the AK will hang PERFECTLY by your side. One problem, however, is that by carrying your AK in this manner, you CANNOT do a rollover manuever if necessary.

Kyoon,
With the ak you don't need the fancy slings of the ar because the mounts are on the side of the weapon. This enables you to carry it slinged, but at the ready.
The ar has the sling attachments on the bottom of the rifle, so it must have a special sling to be able to carry it slinged at the ready.

An all around nice sling I've found is on the gas mask, US issue.
