View Full Version : Modified shooting position with 30-rounder in place?
Just grabbed my AK slapped in 30 rd mag and hit the dirt. Ok living room floor. Just would had to shoot off my elbows as opposed to part of my forearm and elbow resting on the ground to clear mag.If I had been firing would have had carpert burns on elbows. You have to hold the rifle and upper body up pretty high and rest on the tips of elbows. All the prone shooting I have done has been with NHM-91 with bipod. The bipod makes a real difference. Try one it lets you rest your weight on your forearms and not just on elbows.

You can also roll over a bit to turn the rifle and make room for the mag.

Having spent some time with my MAK90 out in the field, I'm curious if someone has some insight into going prone with an AK and a 30-round mag in place. The mag is too long, or my arms are too short, or something...
Is the prone position just to be avoided with AK's? Thanks for any follow-up you can provide!

Long Duck, don't know if you'll get this but another alternative is to let the rifle "monopod", that is to rest on the magazine. You then, for right-handers, grip the mag or the junction of the mag and receiver with your left to keep it upright. To move the muzzle up, slide back from the weapon and/or move your right elbow out. To shoot lower, slide up on the rifle and/or move your right elbow in.

If you are in an area where you have brush or trees, try using the kneeling position. I have found I can shoot a better score kneeling than prone. Plus (tactically) it's fast to get into and much faster to come out of than prone. If you're in 4" grass, it's not a good idea, but in 24 - 30" brush, it's very good and surprisingly stable.
