Now here is a weapon distributed by Robinson arms that brings the battle-proven AK-47 with usual maximum caliber size in assault rifles, the .308 (7.62x51mm). Excellent. Tactically speaking, in any situation offered to me, my rifle squad, my fire team or my family, I want power. The more power the better. In my mind, overpenetration is not an issue. Ballistically speaking, the .308 has better wound potential, media penetration, and range;which I want. An assault piece that gives me a ballistic advantage over most fired from the ever so reliable AK style weapon gives me a tactical advantage in overall combat efficiency right off the bat. The VEPR .308 isn't really designed as a military weapon as its actual intended use is a VEPR hunter in Russia. (Warthog) Its sights only go out to 300 meters and it only excepts VEPR .308 5 to 10 round magazines. None the less, an AK style weapon firing the .308 cartridge is a great start that can be easily built upon.VEPR.308DPZ

The VEPR's rear sight can be replaced with the 1,100m RPK sight because other than the markings they're indentical. I also like the power of the .308 but IMHO the 10rd mag is too limiting to serve as a primary defense rifle. Plus, the VEPR's trigger doesn't allow full use of the VEPR's accuracy. Like you I would love to see the VEPR design carried just a little bit further then we'd have the perfect "big brother" to the AK!

if you want a .308 ak, try getting the Mitchell arms m90. it is a yugo ak chambered in 308, and 20rd hi cap mags are available.

Check out this web sight http://mike.kalishnikov.guns.ru
This guy offers a photo of a .308 Vepr that has been modified to accept Galil Mags, talk about SWEEEEET. If only it could be pulled off using the cheap and plentful FN-FAL mags!
I bet for a heck of a lot less money, you could have a very fine FN FAL built to serve your purpose.

I also like the power of the 7.62x51, but for many uses in tactical situations the lighter, lighter recoiling, higher capacity rifle (AK) has an advantage. Unless your opposition is in APCs or behind a lot of protection, the AK will take him out.
I'll agree that the difference is not as great in semi-auto fire as in full-auto. And I would REALLY love to have a VEPR. They feel good.

i have one of the vepr rifles, wanted the carbine but could only get a good gun show deal on the rifle. nice gun, but has limitations. first, the gun is sort of heavy, i topped it with a tasco 3x9 and took it deer huntin, after a few hours up and down the hill sides. trust me i was ready to con my little brother in to using his winchester model 94 the rest of the day. aside from the weight, the 10 round clip is a bummer. i looked to pick up some fn-fal clips to adapt to the vepr but i was uncertain as to the succesfullness and legality of doing such. anyone comment on this particular aspect? as for rapid fire, well hold on, although much better than most other 308 rifles this gun still does kick. this makes rapid fire at even modest ranges (50-75 yards) quite an adventure. the fastest i've been able to do is to empty the 10 round clip (in just under 12 seconds) into a stump at 150-160 yards and keep a rough 12-14 inch group off-hand. the accuracy is another question, benched with military ball ammo it will keep a sub 3" group at 100, but every now and again there is a flyer (usually the first). trigger pull is nice and light, but the creep is bad. the really cool thing is you can't arguee withthe power of a 308. my brother and i were doing some unoffical penetration studies on some old junk cars and that round cuts through sheet metal like a hot knife through butter. every round we fired at the engine just destroyed it. there's nothing that can come close tthat kinda performance. while all said i think it is a good gun, it wasn't quite what i had expected. i think that i may go with one of those ak-74 variants if i get the money together. much more practical rifle for shootin ground hogs and carrying around the woods. later, sloth
