hello, this is the place to discuss the
many designs of vehicles that you may use, want to use (or can't afford http://www.ak-47.net/akcgi/smile.gif ), in a
survival or combat situation.
let's start by naming our faves.
my personal favorites are...
1) the Bren Carrier (WW2 era tracked vehicle)
2) the Hummvee (a popular favorite)
there seems to be a growing movement around
Manitoba Canada for the Bren, which I like,
because that means more available parts. http://www.ak-47.net/akcgi/smile.gif
who else has a favorite vehicle (other than
an automobile) that they want to praise/criticize??
let's hear em...

Don't know anything about them, but those Russian jeeps look kinda cool. Anyone have any info on these? Can get a good look at one in a movie called "Tactical Assault" (pretty descent movie, too).

Chevy/GMC 4x4 p.u. truck.
Parts are plentiful and cheap.
Built durable.
Can reinforce the bed to store pop-up shooters.

revise my list to include the
British Ferret Armoured Car.
and the U.S. M114 Tracked APC.
i'm not usually keen on glorified cars & trucks, but the WW2 Dodge Command Car is something special.
even though it's just an old jeep, give it
the right paint job and even today it could
pull up to a $200 a plate celebrity dinner
and look decent atleast.
hey if only everybody could afford to go buzzing around the countryside in an armoured vehicle eh??

Chris, the Command Car was not a jeep, it was the 3/4 ton truck with different body. That ws the forerunner of the Dodge Power Wagon.
While it may not be the most durable vehicle, there is nothing classier to me than the White half-track. Of course, I'm not including those WWII German half-tracks.

Gimme a Duece and a half, a torch/welder, some plate steel, and a few hours, and I'll have the perfect survival/SHTF vehicle for my needs.

Lucian_blackrose,
You been watching those A-Team reruns again? That stuff will make you go blind... Oh wait, That was something different. Never mind. http://www.ak-47.net/akcgi/wink.gif

I suppose I have to add something to this. This is ABTOMAT's list 'o' favorites:
1. Krupp Protze. The ultimate light truck IMHO. Very neat, but you'd probably have to sell your soul to buy one these days.
2. US Weasel tracked vehicle. Better than what Santa has. Floats too.
3. British Ferret Mk 1. Small, fast, cheap. Cooler than a Miata.
4. Russian PT-76. I can dream, can't I?
5. And finally, a very interesting German half-track (thanks for reminding me, Packrat). The Sd. Kfz. 7/2 with Flak 36 AA gun. No better way to get strange looks when parked at K-Mart.
Of course, I actually don't own any of these. I am thinking about a Ferret in the future. I've seem 'em for under $9K.
Well, that's about it.

No, I didn't mistype that.

Lucian, I think you must have been watching "The Gauntlet" and thinking about the bus.
If it qualifies (it is a commercial vehicle), how about the Pinzgauer? I think there was one in the movie "Congo". Tough looking little truck.

Actually, I was more talking about making certain mods to hold things in ways that I like. I would rather start with the ambulatory duece and a half. Kinda got the base idea from a project I saw in SOF magazine.

I thought that was an old German UNIMOG in "Congo". Used to live in Germany, and those UNIMOGs are great. They can be used for just about anything.

I haven't seen the movie in some time, but it looked like a UNIMOG to me. Of course my reputation will be damged for life if I'm wrong. http://www.ak-47.net/akcgi/smile.gif

M60A3 MBT for the reliability
M1A1 Abrams for the kick ass power
both with reactive armor and a platoon of mechanics in a duece

I drove an M109A5 in the Army. I guess that would be my choice. I just hate cleaning it. You think the AK is bad http://www.ak-47.net/akcgi/smile.gif

I have to go with the Mercedes UNIMOG. Very durable and it has a PTO.
ill just put 35" run flat tires on my 1995 YJ and weld a post for a " ma duce " in the back!

For all you lovers of the 3/4 ton 4x4, the old FJ-40 Landcruiser by Toyota is much more the child of these than of the Jeep. They were a kick-ass machine, especially the earlier ones. The '68 to early 70's were tops in my book. They were civilian, but so are Hummers.

Cadillac Gage V-100 Commamdo w/ twin .50's, or a .50 and a breech loaded mortar.
In all civilan guise, I'd still take the Commando but with twin .50 semiautos fitted.
Second choice, a Ferret w/ single .30 cal MG in turret.

Call me wierd but I would love to have a Land-Cruiser like the Somali gangs rode around in,complete with M2 or DshK-38 mounted on the back. A Deuce and a Half would be pretty cool too.

It's really simple, just follow steering and flow with it. You see, Ironhand's my thing!

This little puppy caught my eye on the web site Chucko pointed out above. Suppose for urban survival you can beat a bonified armored car powered by a 350 V-8. http://www.ak-47.net/akcgi/smile.gif

Aztodeth, are you sure? You mean the ORIGINAL VW Beetle? I mean come on...
Its way too small for my needs.
I MIGHT steal my parents Suburban, but they'd kill me if it got shot up...
If I had some Kevlar plates i'd put them in my GMC Safari. http://www.ak-47.net/akcgi/biggrin.gif
