View Full Version : A few questions
OK at the Oct 8th shoot I got to shoot some belt feds and a Class III M16A1
(Thanks Last defender & Partisian .50)
I have saved up some money cause I want something a little more exotic than a semi
and for the same price as a 1919 semi I can get a Mac11 full auto.
My question is this:
What is involved in the Class III stuff
I've heard that you get finger printed
and that the ATF can come into your home whenever hey want for a weapons check.
Is this right?
Is it a one time 200.00 dollar fee or yearly?
Also I would be buying it from a dealer so as to only pay the transfer once.
I've also read most of the stuff at AR15.com and here along with some stuff at subguns.
any advice would be great!

You must submit finger prints and a passport photo with your Form 4 and you must also get the signature of the chief law enforcement officer for the area you live in. The $200 tax is one time only per NFA firearm. Possessing a NFA firearm does not give the BATF authority to search your home anytime they want. Now, if you possess an FFL, and your home is the place of business, then the BATF does have legal right to search your house at any time without probable cause or warrant. Even is you buy your NFA firearm out of state, you can avoid the double transfer tax by only buying weapons that are on a Form 3 held by another class III dealer. Your local class 3 will usually charge you a transaction fee, but it will be less than the tax. Hope this helps.

You must also live in a state that allows ownership of FA weapons. Not all do. Getting approval for a Class III can be a lot of work and take guite a bit of time. Be patient and good luck.
Well then I guess it's a go with the Mac.
Also would that be the county sheriff that signs the paper work?
Anyone that lives in SUSQUEHANNA county got a Class III weapon?
I here BUCKS county is real easy to get the
signature but I don't know about my county.
PS:
Pa is a class III friendly state.

My best advice is to find a local class 3 dealer and talk to him. You may have an easier time getting your signoff than you think. My CLEO signoff was the easiest part of the whole process, all it took was a phone call. My class 3 dealer sent me to the right person. If I had known that I could get the signoff a couple of years ago, I wouldnt have spent so much money on semi auto stuff. I just got a Cobray SWD M11/9. It took less than 2 months for my form 4 to be approved. I picked it up this past friday and I have been wasting ammo ever since.
