Go then to the Stopping Power Forum. Then check the hot thread moderated by Evan Marshall (yes), entitled "5.56mm Haters -- Help is on the way." It's an amazing story! It's now running over four pages and if we've got some input, it would surely be welcome. Would be super to get the thread going here, as well.
Apparently AR15.com had or has some industrry sources thaat didn't want to get burned, so they deleted the thread on that site. They also made reference to some other unspecified sensitivities as a reason for dropping the thread.

Found some info here.

"Army SF realizes the M16/M4 carbine's adaptability and for their Phase II
SOPMOD has an upper receiver module shooting 6.8mm (!) cartridges for greater range/striking power
though it means introducing an entirely new ammo type which the DoD mandarins will likely resist. Why
go to 6.8mm when we already have more powerful 7.62mm in the system and in every Army infantry"
