I own ak's, fal's, and sks's and would like to join ya'll in ar-15 land.
What would you suggest as an entry rifle. Got to watch the green backs but would be interested in reliable functioning and able to gobble up NATO surplus ammo. Are ar's chrome lined? Thanx.....

Welcome to the group, garybob!!!

The majority of ARs are chrome lined. I have a Bushmaster XM-15 E2S 20" H-BAR and am thrilled with it. I have seen them at gunshows for around $700 and Aim Surplus has them for $699. The basic rule for ARs seems to be follow the ABCs: Armalite, Bushmaster, and Colt. I have also heard the Olympics are very good also.

Unfortunately, a good AR will gobble up the greenbacks faster than any AK or SKS. I have seen Olys for as low as $550. Unless you put one together yourself, you'd be hard pressed to stay under $700, but there are some to be found if you hit enough gun shows.

Good luck and I hope you find a nice one!

And yes, AK-nuts can and do own other firearms, including ARs! :D

very easy, esp. the olympic pcr4, kit is all put together and test fired, except a couple hours to assemble a lower reciever, thats about it, I just built one for under $600...........20" heavy barrel standard, bought the oly forged lower reciever locally from a dealer..............that included shipping and taxes.

p.s. it eats up commie steel ammo and nato brass stuff like candy, and is a very nice rifle, very few except bushmaster come standard with chrome lined barrels, it is an option usually.

I was in same situation as you Gary. I went for the Colt but it was not cheap. Now I have found my AKs sitting lonely in the mini vault. Shooting an AR15 is addictive. I shot my friend's Armalite and then I had to have an AR15. I have some nice AKs, but it is nice to have one of the "good guys" guns in the safe. I have found myself on eBay and other sites now looking for and buying AR accessories. I have won some cool stuff from eBay and auctionarms lately for low $$.. 2 scope and accessory mounts $10.00+shipping on eBay, a sling $5.00+shpng, and an extra Orlite 30rd mag from Israel for $12.00+shpg. The world of ARs is fun but can get in your wallet hard if ya let it. I have shot the UMC .223 and had great success and range consistency and they use good quality casings. best of all, Inexpensive amo too!! I just mounted a 3-9x40 scope on mine on top of my carry handle. Look at my profile and I think there is a link to some pics on my Yahoo photo storage of the scope mount.

Chrome lining comes standard with Bushmaster. Bushy's are the closest thing to mil spec too. No offense 68capturedAK47 but Colts come with that funky take down pin, goofy trigger group and usually a non chrome 1/7 twist barrel. If you can find an older Colt with out all that crap you should buy it.
If you buy a Bushy from Ed at Gunsmoke, you can get one with his A2 muzzle brake so it will look like a pre ban. Good luck.

I'm playing with the idea of getting the Bushmaster XM-15 E2S 20" at AIM. Will these accept all of the USGI magazines?

I'm assuming that they come with a 10 rnd mag because of the 94 ban on hi-cap mags..

If an AR can be a fun as my AK I'll get one for sure.;)

I think they all take high cap mags, my new Oly does

Couldn't locate any muzzlebrake at Gunsmoke website. Is it advertised?
