I just purchased my first AR and of course needed some ammo for it. According to the Olympic Arms site, there are types of ammo I should not use (specifically Wolf) due to lacquer that will cause jamming or other problems, so I went to Cheaper than dirt and the best deal I could find (other than brands I am not supposed to use) was federal at $13 a 20 rd box. There has to be better deals for rounds I just want to blast with.

Any ideas?

Almost anything is better than those prices...

Try Century Arms, Ammoman, AIM Surplus or J&G Sales.

I pay between $100 and $140/1000, and only ever buy in case lots.

$13/20 is the insane price of $650/1000 - never buy in small lots if you can help it.

Sportsman's Guide may have some of the 300 or 600 round "battlepacks" of south african surplus still, at around $40/300, if you're looking to buy in less than case quantities.

Can you use 5.56 spec ammo in an Oly? If you can the SA battle packs are the way to go. If you can only use .223, then check out American Eagle. You can find it about anywhere and it's good stuff.

You can get a good deal on South African 5.56 battle packs at www dansammo.com. Free shipping east of the Mississippi.

you should be able to get white box Winchester Q1313A which is nato spec Israeli made ammo for about $4.00/20, which isnt cheap but not that bad, I shoot Wolf and Barnaul steel case ammo in my Olympic PCR4, with no problems so far, just make sure you clean the chamber well after shooting, and I usually mix brass ammo in between to help (I think) keep the chamber happy, if you don't shoot steel case exclusively, I think you will be ok, the newer Oly chambers are NATO mil spec now, so should be ok, the older SAMMI chambers were the ones that had the most problems with the steel case stuff.

Usually century, but also from ammoman, sportsmans guide, cole distributing, lippman enterprises. I've heard J&G and aim surplus are good too, though I've never personally ordered from them.

I can vouch for Aim. Bought ton-o-ammo from them, usually have an angry brown truck driver about 3 days after ordering. Another good place to look is the larger gun shows.

As for ammo, stay away from lacquer coated stuff, the ARs generally do not run hot enough to keep the chamber cleaned out. I have been using the South African surplus from Aim and my AR has never missed a beat.

Second ammendment, I just dragged home 4 cases of Sellier and Bellot .223. Need I say more! :D Great stuff, I personally have not had any problems using S&B. As for Aim, I am a legend there!:D Great place to buy anything.

You should not have any problems with Russian Ammo!!!!

There have been numerous posts on the so called laqeur problem.
Most ARs eat this stuff up, and it is cheap.

Try wholesale hunter for specials on Q3131a.

I have had very good experience with the Barnaul Silver Bear 62 grain HP in the zinc plated case. No lacquer, functions great in two Bushmaster carbines and a preban Colt ST HBAR. Accuracy is more than adequate for plinking/blasting. I got mine at a show for like $85/M OTD. Several of the above web ammo seller sites mayhave the Silver Bear stuff.

Also, ammoman.com has the Federal XM193 55 grain stuff for $199/M delivered. This is the real deal stuff made at the Lake City ammo plant, now run by Federal.

The barrel on my Olympic says 5.56, I go searching for 5.56 specifically because I have learned about the difference between it and .223. I just wind up finding ammo for sale under the ".223 (5.56)" category......wtf??? Can somebody give me a name of a good brand that is true 5.56 with a reasonable price for 1000 rounds? Im goin to check ammoman now.

If you've got an Oly. AR-type rifle, keep in mind that steel cased ammo. will wear out the aluminum "case-deflector" on the upper receiver faster than brass cased...

how will the aluminum case deflector of the Oly wear out any faster than any other aluminum case deflector of any other brand?

I didn't mean to imply that the aluminum Oly. case-deflector will wear out faster than one on an AR-type rifle made by other manufacturers... Only that using steel cased ammo will most likely wear out your case-deflector faster than brass cased ammo. Because the steel case is harder than brass... So, IMO brass cased ammo would preferable to extend the life of your Oly. upper. OR, if you really want to use steel cased ammo., I've seen a plastic "shell/case-deflector" made for AR-type rifles that prevents the empty case from impacting the aluminum case-deflector... Hope this helps...

I dont know what upper or barrel you have on your gun. I do know that the olympic SUM (Stainless Ultra Match, and excellent barrel) is marked 5.56, but if you call them they will recommend you use 223 and not 5.56. why the mark there match barrels 5.56 instead of 223, I have know idea.

I understand what you are saying, but I would like to make a couple points. First, of course while steel is harder than brass it is also lighter. A steel case being ejected form the port will not empact the deflector with the same force as a brass case. Most of the M16A2s that I was issued and the ARs that I have owned or shot that had the deflector, never or very rarely had the ejected cases even touch the deflector. I realy believe the deflector is more of a protection piece for the FP cover. Having fired and seen fired thouands if not 100s of thouands of steel case 5.56/.223 ammo I have never seen a worn out deflector. However I suppose this could happen and I don't intend this post as any type of flame. There are enough silly gagets out there to hang on an AR, why not a deflector protector.

Well, I'm no expert but it seems to me that a lighter case is gonna be ejected harder and faster than a heavier one... I've certainly noticed impact marks on the case deflectors of AR-type rifles... Anyway, IMO brass cased ammo is gonna cause less wear on aluminum case deflectors than steel cased ammo...

My barrel is the stock run of the mill AR type, nothing special here at all. It's got real crappy finish and it's engraved 5.56. So I guess it's cool to use .223....

I like the Silver Bear ammo real well and so does mine and my brothers AR's. I get mine from ammunitionstore.com for $59 per 500 rounds. I get it in two days as I am only a state away from them.
I also like the Lake City XM193 sold by Federal. More expensive though. I pay $89 per 500 rounds but reload it.

For those who are worried about using .223 ammo in a 5.56 barrel, don't be!!!! You can fire all the .223 you can find if you so choose!! Its if you have a .223 barrel and you try to fire the hotter loaded 5.56 rounds through it that you may experience problems from minor FTF's or FTE's to catastrophic KB's!!! Shoot .223's with confidence through a 5.56 chambered barrel.

As far a brass deflectors getting worn out, am I the only one who has hard time swallowing this discussion at all? If people are that worried about getting their "forged" aluminum black anodized upper brass defelctor scratched take black electrical tape and place on it.......sheesh......brass defelctor getting worn......
