Does anyone one know the differences between an AK-47 and an AKM or where I can find the info? Are all the parts interchangeable (i.e. the same gun, essentially?).
Thanks!

They are both select fire 7.62X39 cal. assault rifles. The AK-47 has a milled receiver with a plain action cover and safety/selector lever. The AKM is a modernized version of the AK-47 that has a stamped and riveted receiver with a ribbed action cover and selector. The AKM also has a slant cut muzzle brake. The AK-47 was fielded in 1949 and the AKM was fielded in 1959. They have both been obsolete in the soviet army since the AK-74 was fielded in 1975. Most parts will interchange. The AKM has a "rate reducer" installed that is lacking in the original AK-47.

One other thing that was not mentioned is the AK-47 uses a straight auto sear and the AKM uses a curved auto sear.
