Here's two teasing pics of my Christmas present, a 1906 Gustaf Swedish Mauser 96. It has one of the most beautiful elm stocks I have ever seen on a military rifle. The first picture is kinda dark as the flash didn't work on the camera. The second is more representative. This weekend I'll post some more.

IMO it's an Ash wood stock. Elm doesn't have grain like that. Ash resembles Oak in grain structure. Your's has really beautiful contrast at the groth ring seperations. I have a 96/38 short rifle with a similar looking stock.

Scheutz,
I am just basing my assumption of elm on Karlina's findings on what were originally thought of as Ash stocks vs. Elm.

In reality, I don't care what type of wood it is, it's just beautiful.

They must have some bizzare Elm trees over there cause the grain structure sure looks like ash. Very porous for Elm.
