I've seen the different after-market stocks out there. I finally settled on getting a Chinese Vietnam-era fiberglass stock to have as an emergency back-up stock should my current stock crack or split. The Choate stock on the other hand had a really nice solid feel to it, both the Dragunov and standard versions of this stock. I disliked the ATI and Ramline stocks. They seemed very thinly built. I never saw the Monte Carlo style stocks you see advertised in Shotgun News. I just liked the solid feel the Choate stocks had.

I have one of those ATI Dragunov-style stocks installed, and my only real complaint about it is that it doesn't have a sling mount.
Also, the rifle as a whole seems heavier than it was when it just had the standard wooden stock. Aside from that, it's not a bad unit (though in hindsight, if I had known about the Choate model I might have spent the extra $$ for it). I have a Choate top-folder for my shotgun and I'm quite happy with it.

I had a folding stock on mine but decided to put back on the original. I completely sanded down the finnish to bare wood then applied two coats of red mahogany stain then sanded it once again with a real fine sandpaper. I then added a one inch butt extension, ventalated handguard, bi-pod, and muzzle comp and 30 round mag. The thing looks unreal, like a trophy piece.

I've tried them all, the Choate, the dragonoff, the sporter with the high cheek piece and the plastic folder. None fit any of my SKSs very well, all had to be shimmed up or fitted (grind plastic) in various places to keep the gun(s) from rattling. The folder is probably the best fit, though the stock is rather flimsy, I doubt if it would hold up for very long. The Choate was the most expensive but rattles like heck on all three of my rifles. It is also the lightest. The other two are heavier than the original stock. Frankly, all of these aftermarket stocks in my opinion are a ripoff. I think you'd be better off refinishing your orignal or just keeping it the way it is. The SKS is a good sow's ear, you can't make a silk purse out of it. However, if you still want to try one, I'll sell you any of them but the folder for a $20 bill + shipping costs.

Thanks for all your input, I have decided to stay with the orignal stock it's not bad look as far as SKS wood goes, I may strip it down sand it and dress up the finish some.
it's a nice tight fit no rattle at all .
Thanks Doug

Hey Mac66,

My SKS actually fits really tight in the Fiberforce stock. In fact, I played merry hell getting it installed in the first place.

As for your Choate stock, if you're serious about the $20 deal I might be interested.

Sand off the finnish with 60, 80, 120 then 220 grit sandpaper till it's smooth as silk but be careful not to remove any manufacturers markings. Also sand it down along the squared edges at the top and in the narrow of the foregrip to get a slight slimmer profile and nice to shoot but be careful not to remove to much right where the rifle mounts into the stock otherwise it will stick out funny. Then use some Red Mahogany stain, one coat will do the trick and will bring out the highlights of the natural wood if rubbed in properly and evenly thin (looks beautiful). Go out and get a pin on muzzle comp, detachable 30 round mags, and possibly an SKS Bi-Pod that mounts directly on the Bayolug, since you will no longer need the Bayonet with the muzzle comp, it will look like an M-14. Make sure to get a rubber but extension as well and it will be awsome, I guarantee you will feel like you have a true bush gun battle rifle.
