SOmeone once told me about a way to make the standard SKS take AK mags like the sporter SKS. I was wondering if anyone has any info. on the subject.

I looked at the plans. You'd better be a darn good machinist if you want it done right! That stuff was *way* over my head. http://www.ak-47.net/akcgi/redface.gif

I just picked up a Norinco sporter it takes AK mags, just happened to be in the army surplus store here in town he had a sporter on the shelf for the exact same price of of the 10 rnd SKS so I snatched it up.
I paid $299 for it.
get them while you can.

I have one of the nicest SKS I have ever seen but I might unload it here at a gunshow and pick up a beater AK.

Supposedly this has never really worked. It was asked on subguns a little while back. NOONE had ever seen a successful conversion that didn't jam or have other problems.

Hello,

The other day I found in my garage a SKS conversion kit still in the wrap.

It came with all the hardware to convert an SKS and it also came with three thirty round zytel mags.

The things that we find from the old days!

Take care, OUT in Vegas!

Well Wareagle, I have a 1950 Tula Arsenal Russian blued SKS with the orignal "in the white bolt and carrier" comes with original wood stock which I restained and sanded but was careful not to remove any manufacturers markings (looks beautiful), also comes with 2 thirty round mags, original fixed mag, one ten round detachable mag, stripper clips, folding zytel stock set, ventalated handguard, muzzle compensator, folding bi-pod which mounts on the bayo. lug, spike and original blued blade bayonet plus lockable carrying case. This really is more of a collectors type SKS because of the early production run number (#417) and early blued finnish with the "white" bolt looks like a showpeice, all numbers match and the rifle is in excellent to new condition. Extremely accurate and fun to shoot but only has about 400 rounds through the gun. The gun itself is worth around $375-400.00 plus about $180.00 worth of accessories but will sacrafice for 425.00 plus shipping. Possible trade on NHM-91 if in excellent to new condition. Contact me at ak47mark@netscape.net
Thanks,
Bryant

Bryant, sounds like you & I have the same rifle. I have a 1950 Tula serial #458 which came w/ a blued blade bayonet that was never sharpened. (couldn't cut soft butter with it if you wanted to) Does yours have also have a spring loaded firing pin? Regardless, I too believe that these rifles were refurbished for two reasons..
1st, the serial number prefix on the receiver is AM (cryllic) but underneath it is stamped DM. All other parts are correctly stamped with no modifications.
2nd, the lacquer on the stock almost totally obliterates the star & the year of manufacture but the serial number is very legible appearing as if it was added later.
Personally though, it doesn't matter to me what was or wasn't done to this rifle before I got it, pull the trigger & it accurately shoots each & every time.

Back in the early 90's I had an SKS converted to take AK mags by a company in the southeast. It coct $150 and worked flawlessly. I've seen plans to do this at a gunshow in PHX. AZ. It looked pretty involved and it would probably be better to buy an original. The company that sells the plans is called Firingpin Enterprises and is located in PHX.

Mine was never refinished, Prefix NR all over the rifle including the mag and stock. The thing was also loaded with cosmoline when I bought it. Everything was brand new inside and out. I actually searched through several boxes (about 50) before I found this gem from my dealer. He told me he had a really old one with a really low number and in NIB condition but he forgot which box it was in. Most of the other Russians had a later year and most had a parkerized finnish and had the black bolt. Everyone who sees this really is impressed with the early Russian machining and finnish. I even had a manual with it that was about four pages long all in crylic but my dumb ass gave it to my uncle for his collection.
