View Full Version : Mag modification for hunting
The state I live in specifies that an auto loading rifle can hold a total of only six rounds when used for hunting.Being a cheap SOB,rather than purchase a five round magazine for my SKS,I drilled a 3/16" dia. hole in the bottom of the magazine, inserted a No.10 screw, wound a nut on it and closed the magazine to see how many rounds it would hold, then trimmed the screw to allow the magazine follower to go far enough down to hold five rounds. When hunting season's over, just remove the screw.A black oxide coated screw makes the whole job almost invisible.

Why not just insert a small wooden block inside the magazine cup, shaving it down to where it only accepts the number of rounds you want? Why modify your rifle permanently? You can remove the block when youre not hunting.

A friend of mine uses a block like the one you mention,in fact he gave me one.My gripe with it was that it fell out of the weapon every time I opened the magazine.
Hello x39,
A few years ago I remember that someone was selling five round SKS mags.
They we're very nice and they we're flush when installed.
It's a long shot but go to www.TAPCO.com (http://www.TAPCO.com) and they might have them.
Also try SKS man. I am not sure of the correct site name.
Take care, OUT in Vegas!

Hello LAgunman2K,
That five round mag I am talking about is a fixed mag. Would it still be banned in Kali?

nope a fixed 5 rnd is still legal in kalif, anything over 10 rnds fixed is banned, so the stock 10 rnd is OK, for the time being

When I put a lightweight Choate stock on my SKS paratrooper model, I also wanted a 5 round hunting mag. I bought a plastic detachable one which fell out everytime it was fired. I next bought a steel fixed 5 rnd mag which apparently been cut down from an orginal. This mag would not feed more than one round at a time. Finaly, I went to a gun show and bought a standard 10 fixed mag, put 5 rounds in it, measured the difference and cut the rest off with a hacksaw. Smoothed the edges with a file and touched it up with cold bluing. The mag now fits flush with the stock and feeds just like the original.
You know, thats what I really like about firearms like the SKS and the AK,you can do a little tinkering without breaking the bank or your heart if you screw something up!
