I'm looking for some information about a SKS that I own.
Here's some information on the rifle.
Stock is wood (not laminated) with dark redish stain and rear sling mount on side of stock.
Stock has a triangle with a 1 stamped inside it, while on the right side of the stock it has a triangle with a w stamped inside. Plus another with what appears to be a chinese symbol inside a triangle.
All serial numbers match through out rifle to include the stock.
Blade bayonet, polished.
Milled trigger
Threaded barrel with long lug.
Only english on receiver is KFS ATL GA
Receiver has a triangle with 26 inside followed by 3 chinese symbols.
Serial number is 81580XX
Right side of receiver has two chinese symbols stamped in the receiver.
There is no caliber stamped on the receiver.
Under the barrel just forward of the gas system is stamped SKS 7.62 China
Rear sight looks polished better than others.
Bolt is a dull satin grayish looking steel that is very cleanly machined and polished.
Sorry for the long winded post, but I wanted to give as much information as possible.
Where was this rifle made, approx the year of production and import.
What would be the estimated value.
Gun is in 95 to 98% condition.
Thanks guys,
TS

I'm not informed enough to give much info, but you might want to read what CALIFORNIAN had to say about my rifle, under the "Info on Chinese SKS" thread. From your description, it sounds like both our rifles came from the same factory.

hi Target Shooter, you have one of the good
ones, the serial no. range is 1964 production
when the Chinese use to make them better. The
small markings on the stock are inspection marks from the village workshops that make the stocks, and the now famous "triangle 26"
arsenal mark inside a triangle. The 3 Chinese
characters translate to: type 56 . since it has the importers marks ,it probably came in
the US between 1988 to 1993? all matching no.'s makes it more valuable to collecters,
I like these early original Chi-com SKS's
because they are from the Vietnam era and
they are interesting to have. I dont know
exactly what the value would be ,but my guess
is around $250 ? maybe more since it's an
early model.

CALIFORNIAN,
Thanks for the information.
I got this rifle off of a long time friend I was in the military with. He was a Chief Master Sergeant in the USAF when I was in. He retired in the late 1980's and I got out in 1990. I bought the rifle off of him around 1990 to 1991. He had bought the rifle around 1988 to 1989.
I was told years ago that if the caliber was stamped under the barrel and not on the receiver that the gun was a first year import.
The government had required the caliber be marked on the receivers and made them change the markings from under the barrel to the receiver.
I do appreciate the production year, and all the other information. Didn't know it was made that early.
Any help on the caliber markings?
Does this sound right?
Thanks again,
TS

Yes, I do recall the earlier imports had the
caliber and import mark under the barrel near
the bayonet lug, because my friends SKS that
he bought in mid 1988 had: CIA ST ALBANS VT
762x39 ,under the barrel in very tiny letters
that were barely noticable. I think they look
better when the import marks are not showing
or noticable.

Your Chinese SKS (Type 56) was manufactured at State Owned Factory (SOF)
296, (founded by the Nationalists in the 1930s) located near the southeastern
Chinese city of Chongjing (Chungking)--which is referenced by the number "26"
inside of a triangle that you mention. SKS carbines were manufactured there from
1956 until the early 1970s. You have a standard military issue SKS.

Also known as Jianshe Industrial Group, SOF 296 now mainly produces Japanese
Yamaha motorcycles under license.

In the early '70s, all SKS production was transferred to SOF 976 in Tsingtao.
(SOF 976 SKS's are identified by a stylized number "416" inside of a triangle.)
These are where most of the export SKS's are now made. Even so, many SKS's
parts are still manufactured in small to medium sized shops throughout China
(locations classified) and assembled at still other classified locations throughout the
nation.

Yours, like the earlier poster reported, was about 1964 manufacture. Blade section
bayonets were mounted on Chinese SKS's from the start of production in 1956
through 1965, when the spike bayonet was substituted.
