I've seen these milled Romanian SKS's on sale for $199 in Cali. Are they any good? and is the price relatively worth it?

They're decent rifles, but again, any pile of 40-year old cold-war era rifles, you're gonna have rocks and gems. You need to hand-select your rifle and the best way to do that is go to a local gunshow and try to find one. I lucked out with mine and it's dead-on and frighteningly accurate. I made a small drink can dance around a berm with every shot last weekend at 100-meters with iron-sights. I was outshooting people with bolt action scoped rifles. Either they sucked or I got one of the gems. The drink can looked like a tiny piece of aluminum lace after I was finished with it. It depends if you can find one in decent shape. Best of luck getting one. Get out of Kalifornia before they either build an iron curtain to keep you in or we build a containment wall to keep Kalifornia away from the rest of us. Best of luck!

I just got mine in the mail today. Its from Centruy Arms which is the same importer that Turners and some others go through. The good thing about going to a store is you can inspect and choose which one you like rather than taking a gamble like I did but I didnt want to get a background check and wanted it mailed to my house so I used my 03-FFL to get it. Its in okay condition...its lised as VG and in most cases it is. The bore is very bright and all numbers match. I just need to clean it up real well then i'll take it out and test fire it.

Whats the best way to remove the bolt carrier cover? This is my first SKS and I dont know how to disassemble it.

You always should hand select a rifle because one's that are older can be in a wide range of quality. As far as SKS's go, get a Russian and one that has the Shiny Bolt and Blued finnish- they are by far the best yet.

I remember seeing the ads for these at the beginning of the summer and I really wanted to get one since the price was so good, but I was really hesitant about purchasing one sight unseen (by mail) because on a C&R I know they can be pretty rough. I finally saw some at Turners a couple of weeks before the Great Western gun show in Pomona and they looked beat so I decided to wait for the show and to my surprise, those were in rough shape also plus, they were missing cleaning rods/kits and none of the numbers matched. I decided at that point against buying one. After all, I'm real happy with my Russian and Chinese models and for all intents and purposes, I don't notice any difference between them shooting or reliability wise.

It sounds like they're starting to scrape the barrel on the Romanian rifles. There is a finite supply of these babies, so when they start showing up with mismatched numbers and looking bad off, you know these are the last rifles coming out of the warehouses. These are the dregs and the incomplete rifles they send when they run out of the rifles they just have to take out of the crates and ship with no effort. Oh well, we knew it wouldn't last. Sad thing is, these are probably the last SKS's coming in new from the Eastern Bloc, unless someone stumbles across a warehouse full of them somewhere, the supply is now fixed. Hmm, maybe someone over here will start making US-made SKS's? Heh...

I notice Century has good, cracked stock Romanian SKSs in their latest flyer for $169.87 each. Does anyone have any experience with these? I have had good to excellent luck with Century in the past with other rifles listed in this condition when I was simply purchasing a rifle as a shooter.

Well you can always put another stock on the rifle, just be aware that the rifle is still subject to the assault weapons ban when you consider what features to add to your rifle. It stops being C&R when you start adding modern features, like folding stocks, threaded barrels, removable mags, etc-etc. Best of luck.

I got one from Bruns Bros for $249 when they first appeared in SGN and it is in very good shape few nicks in wood 95% blueing matching numbers bright shinny bore. Now it
seems as the price drops so does the quality. The ones I have seen at the shows are dogs with ugly laminate stocks.
Mine also is a century import.
If you can find one you like for $199 buy it.
They are milled reciver and triggergroup and have stainless steel bolt like the orignal russian for 1/2 what a good Russian is bringing.I would take any romnain over a Chicom.

Love the Russians though, they look the best but you can't beat the Romanian price.

the romanians price in my opinion is too high, way too high,i dont think i would pay more than $150 for one, i seen the chinese ones for $130 and i bought my russian for $170-- yes it was a few years ago, if you dont have an SKS then i guess this is the only one to get, if the price came down i might get one but nto at $200 and up, but it could make a good SHTF or Y2K gun if you couldnt get an AK or AR and needed something cheap and reliable, and it dont look as evil as the other guns
thats just my opinion, i could be wrong
