I saw a poster last night in the bathroom of an indoor firing range in California. It showed a picture of an AK variant and had the words "SKS Sporter" in large letters. According to the poster, it stated that this particular weapon made between 1992 to 1997 would be banned in California. I didn't read the specific details but I wish I had now just so I could pass on what I read.
Can anybody confirm this or was the poster in the bathroom a fake?
Hello,
It's true. It is the SKS that can take a detachable mag, not the SKS with the fixed ten or twenty round mag.
Take care and thanks for the post, OUT

You can only have the 10 rnd fixed mag NOT the 20.
Thanks Don.

Im probably wrong but I "heard" from folks at carious gun shops that the SKS's that are being banned are the ones that were imported with detach or high cap fixed mags. They were brought here like that and tagged as such so if you have a 10 rd fixed SKS and decide to replace that mag with a detach it "might" be alright.
Again..I could be completly wrong...I never cared to look into it, I dont plan on replacing my fixed mag.
When I was visiting California and asked for a 20 round SKS detatchable mag, the gun shop made it very clear to me that it wasn't legal to have a detatchable hi capacity mag in any SKS.

SKS rifles with fixed magazines (10 or 20 rounds) are legal in California and were not covered by the 1989 Roberti-Roos assault weapon ban. If you owned an SKS with a detachable magazine before the end of 1989, you could keep it as long as you registered it with the state. However, someone in the state government goofed and allowed a number of SKS "sporters" with detachable magazines to be imported and sold in California after the ban. When this was discovered, an SKS sporter buy back program was instituted to get these specific guns out of the state.
Under the new California Assault Weapon ban going into effect 1/1/00, SKS's with fixed magazines that hold more than 10 rounds will be banned. If you own one before 1/1/00 you can keep it, but will have to register it with the state. If you have an SKS with a 10 round fixed magazine, it is not covered by either California ban and does not have to be registered. Hope this helps. to make a correction on ALberts post -- i beleive that you can NOT register the gun under the 2000 ban, and must turn it in
the reason why is cuz the attorney nazi general has found that the SKS Sporter is ILLEGAL under the old law in '89
so these were never registered and cant be this time around (to my knowledge), you will be compensated $230 cash voucher
i say screw that and keep it, hide it, and save it for when TSHTF
if i goofed up my info on here or if they have changed the ruling let me know ok
this should be correct to my knowledge
but check out the website for sure and or call the DOJ

In that case I have a stupid follow-up question. Is the ban of this weapon an arbitrary singling out of a particular gun? What makes this SKS Sporter so much more dangerous than an AR-15 or AK-47 that those can still be had with 100+ round detachable magazines but the SKS has to have a fixed 10 round clip?

no is not a dumb question, its just a DUMB law, i think most people wonder the same thing as you, and the only answer i can give you is that these anti-gun politicans who hate guns, and know nothing about guns are writing gun laws (stupid ones at that), does it make sense for someone who knows jack sh*t about guns to write gun laws ? NOPE
actually i saw a SKS that takes the AK mags at a gun show yesterday, first one i ever saw too, it had a monte carlo stock and the mag well was wide enough to take a AK mag, i dont know who made it since the symbols on it i had never seen before, not sure of the asking price
