I just recieved my Romainian SKS in the mail today. I ordered it from Centrury Arms...its pretty dirty but I think it will clean up nice. All matching numbers and a blade bayonet.
My question is, is there somewhere online where I can read and print out how to take apart the rifle including taking off the handguard and wood equipment?
The only thing I dont like and I dont know if it is common or not is the internal 10 rd mag is loose and wiggles around making noise. I need to see if I can tighten it dowm somehow. Otherwise im "pretty" happy with it.
Thanks.

Thats a great idea but I think California law prohibits this modification.
If I am wrong please say so cuz I would do it in a heatbeat.

No, it's not common for the mag to be loose, sounds like you might have a stretched locking pin on the magazine. To fix this, you'll need a new magazine box. Better yet is to get a Chinese fixed 20-rd replacement magazine. These aren't illegal in CA because they are fixed magazines. The only consideration are your tastes on keeping the rifle authentic, at which point you'll need to secure a replacement ten-rd magazine box. You'll need to pull the trigger group to replace your magazine box, this is a tedious process. Getting the parts out is easy, getting them back in is the trick and requires internals to be lined up properly before you try to slap the trigger group back into place. Let a gunsmith do this or get an illustrated detailed manual. These exist on the internet as websites. No special tools are required, just tremendous patience.

THanks for the help TinMan....Its not "that" loose though..I think i'll just kep it theway it is. The box matches the rest of the rifle and I dont want to bring in foreign parts so im just going to leave it.
One thing I am curious about, is how am I supposed to tell if the firing pin is upside down? I have been told to check for this before firing but I dont know what side is up.."?"
Any help??

Take the bolt out of the rifle. You should be able to push the firing pin in so that it is slightly inside the bolt. If you can not do this, if the firing pin will not go inside the bolt, then the firing pin is in upside down. If it goes in and recesses a little into the hole you are OK.
If upside down, just drift out the retaining pin and flip it over. While it is out it is a good idea to swab out the firing pin hole and coat lightly with gun oil. Put firing pin back in - place retaining pin back in and check to see that the firing pin is not 'sticking out' of its recess hole.
Fine rifle,
enjoy

skitjackson,
If you have the bolt removed from the rifle, look at it dead on, front to back. The extractor claw should be on your left as you face the bolt. On the right side along the outside top part of the bolt you should see a round hole with a pin in it flush with the surface of the bolt. This is the retaining pin.
Drift this pin out, take a small piece of metal and punch the pin out from right to left. As the pin starts out you should see the entire retaining pin come out on the left side. If it is too tight let some liquid wrench or similar oil soak into the hole.
Once the retaining pin is out, the firing pin will easily just slide out the rear of the bolt. If your rifle has been stored in cosmoline grease or the like it is good to swab out the inside of the firing pin hole and retaining pin hole. Lighlty lube, (I use CLP)
Assemble as in earlier posting.
Any search engine will find you internet sites with schematics. Type back at me if you need any more help.
good luck,

Thanks very much for the instructions. I cant seem to get the darn retaining pin out though. I lubed it up with Tetra oil and tried to punch it out but no-go. I'll keep trying. Ive setup the bolt on raised blocks to raise it above table level keeping the middle portion opsn so the retaining pin can have room to move downwards for removal. Im using a center punch and a small hammer to try and wedge it out. If im doing somethin wrong please say so. But I do appreciate the help.
THANK YOU

You're doing the right thing. Some of them are in real tight. Push comes to shove and you can't drift it out, soak the entire bolt in penetrating oil (Liquid Wrench or the like) in a closed jar for a day or two. If is still does not want to come out after this, then at least the penetrating oil will "degrease" the firing pin. If enough grease is removed by just the soaking and the pin rattles when the bolt is shaken, then it is degreased enough for use in the rifle.
If is does go back into the recess of the bolt - it is in the correct way. I just took one apart and assembled it the right and wrong way to confirm this. If is falls back into the bolt - it is in the right way.
If the pin were in upside down than if would protrude through the front face of the bolt. If this is not the case, and you have it degreased, give it a light oil coat and take it out to the range. You are good to go. One of my SKS (chinese) would not come apart. Degreased it, light oil and it has not given me any problem. After 100 rounds or so of pounding I was able to easily drift the pin out for cleaning.
good luck,
safe shooting

Okay thanks. I guess I am going to soak the entire bolt. The pin "IS" placed in correctly and moves about freely but I still want to be avle to get the pin out and clean it and the bolt. Thanks again for the info..youve been a trmendous help!
