ok i see that there are numberous places that have the 7.62X54R semi auto rifles, some call em a romak 3, others the SSG, FAC calls theirs a FPK. i've been told that the barrel on em isn't all that thick, kinda skinny actually, FAC has one listed as 24" heavy match barrel. are all these rifles the same ?

They are one in the same. InterOrdnance is running a special on them via their WEBSITE with a 8 x 42 Russian PSO. The Century Guns have had the Romanian PSL scope w/tritium on theirs.

There are nice shooters and use standard 54r. The barrels do tend to heat up fast and yes they are standard barrels not tapered like others.

They are smooth with little felt recoil and a nice addition to any collection.

AKE is correct. An SSG-97 & a Romak 3 are identical except for what's stamped on the receiver. I have one of each with the only difference being the importers stamp and that one reads 'Romak' and the other 'SSG-97'. Now I have since stripped down the SSG-97 and after a sandjob, new color refinishing job (Russian red), and a fresh coat of store shelf oven paint, it looks better than the standard Romak 3. That is...in my lowly opinion.

Technically, the Romak III is properly a PSL. It stands for something in Romanian. Yes to what everyone else said. Also, if I may add to it, the key to good shooting with the Romak III is WOLF 148 grain ammo, forget the heavier 200 grain. Wolf is supposed to have made 148 grain ammo in response to Romak III and SVD owners, a guy on another board has a letter from Wolf about that. We all signed a group letter too. They came through and now my Romak shoots like it is supposed to.

Cheers!

interesting. i've been thinking of getting a PSL within another year or so. what kind of accuracy are we talking about? also what comparisons can you make between the PSL and the Nagant Sniper? which one would you rather have?

thanks!

dunno how they would shoot side by side, capacity an faster follow up go with the romak, if you are buying a 'real' nagant sniper you are in the same basic price range i think. i suppose if i wanted to i'd just look for a really sweet 91/30 at the 100 mark an scope that with maybe a really old weaver or similar style scope that looks 'old' wouldn't be original but it'd look rustic.

Rivaltm,

What bovver said about the 91/30 is correct. The Mosin Nagant rifles began in 1891 with the Model 1891. It was the standard infantry rifle of the Russiand through WWI and the Russian Revolution. In 1931 the Reds upgraded the 1891 with metric sights and a slightly different receiver design and other minor differences. The 91/30 is generally slightly shorter than the 1891. The M44 is the late WWII carbine version. Also know as the 1 man artillery piece. Awesome boom and fireball the size of a 5 gallon bucket. :D There are other Mosin Nagants, but these three are the primary ones. M39s are Finnish guns made from 91/30s captured by the finns by the millions, fitted with new Finn barrels and stocks. They are considered the best quality of all the Mosin Nagants. They are also heavy as telephone poles.

The 7.62x54R, a powerful, old fashioned rimmed cartridge, is the longest serving military round in history. It started out being designed for the Mosin Nagant rifles in 1891, was used in the SVT-38 and SVT-40 semiautos of WWII, the SVD Dragunov, and the Romak III. The cartridge is still in service. It is also a common machine gun round.

Get your Curio and Relic Federal Firearms License (best 30 dollars you''ll spend) and buy Mosin Nagants wholesale. Visit us in the C&R forums to learn more. Lots of suprisingthings are C&R weapons, you guys need to look into it.

Here are some of my 91/30s...

yes i have 3 m44s. i have never shot any of them before, as i just got done buying 1, didnt know i had the other, and just got the cosmoline off the last. 2 of them have "1951" as the date. these are very good fit and finish. the other was made in ww2, when they couldnt make enough guns, so the fit is leser quality.

thanks for clearing that up guys!

The whole reason I got my C&R was to get M44s. I wanted a 91/30 but got sidetracked and spent all my money on non C&R guns, but a 91/30 is next. I just ordered a Romak from I/O, so that may be a while. Again.

On a side note- FAC has C&R AR 15s listed in their newest ad.
