Great Site!Have been reading for mos. and finally joined!Have 3 SKS's and am wondering what spares to have. Was told to get at least one of everything. Also told that the recoil spring and trigger group are most subject to wear and tear.Gotten mixed reviews of buffer technologies recoil buffers, although I ordered 1 sks and 1 ak to try out.Any info greatly appreciated!Thanx!

Standard spares to have on hand for ANY sort of firearm: Firing pin, recoil spring/assembly, bolt assembly or bolt face. Optional spares are gas tube (due to corrosion), hammer (metal fatigue), all action springs (wear and tear). Premium spares would include a spare barrel, spare trigger group, spare bolt and carrier assembly, spare magazine parts, spare stock assembly, spare bolt hold-back spur.. essentially a parts rifle. I'd go up to optional level spares.

Thanx Tinman!I am in the process of procurring spares before they dry up!What do you think about availability of certain SKS parts? For me,I either have or am buying;1 spare trigger group,3 recoil springs,1 recoil assy.,2 gas tubes,1 bolt,1 bolt carrier,1 operating rod and spring,1 piston and 1 spare receiver cover.Am told that the trigger groups are pretty delicate to work on,so I figure worst case scenario I'll buy another trigger group.Thanx again!Any input appreciated!

Hello Gearhead.
TAPCO was selling some SKS spare parts in their latest flyer.

Check them out at www.TAPCO.com (http://www.TAPCO.com)

I also saw some complete trigger groups for sale. I am having a hard time trying to remember where I did see them. When I find them I will post the address here for you.

Take care, OUT in Vegas!

Welcome aboard-
Yes, this is a terrific site. Lot's of great SKS info here. Also try www.sksman.com (http://www.sksman.com) and Shotgun News for parts. I'm not sure how many Soviet and ChiCom parts are interchangeable. I have one of each, and I should know this, but don't.

You have a good handle on the parts, in fact I daresay you have some over-redundancy on a few of the parts. Youre most likely going to have your firing pins go bad and your bolt face on the bolt may crack over the years, those are the two essential parts. Neat thing is, US-made trigger groups are starting to show up for sale in Shotgun News. You have a good handle on things. Leave something for the rest of us. http://www.ak-47.net/akcgi/wink.gif Pick up a copy of Shotgun News, there is a company called GunParts, Inc. They sell literally everything for the SKS as far as parts. Keep an eye out for a spare receiver cover latch pin, the pin that holds the receiver cover on the rifle. They suffer tremendous pressure and stress and may fail due to metal fatigue. None of the vendors I used had any. I only found one at a gunshow and they wanted a lot for it. Enjoy your firearm. http://www.ak-47.net/akcgi/smile.gif
